Overworked American in London
 

Going to London for 5 days or so. What part of the city should I stay. I would like to be somewhat near the tube, nightlife of some kind, places to go, restaurants and of course a good Pub. I would like to walk the streets and get the feel of the city <BR> <BR>I am a 37 year old young minded overworked American trying to clear my head for a week. <BR> <BR>Hotel recomendations are welcome as well as any ideas. Info on the chunnel is also needed. <BR>Thanks

There are loads of areas that would have what you're after - and every areas has not just one, but many pubs! Probably a hotel near Leicester Square/Covent Garden would suit you well. There are lots of pubs, clubs and restaurants. It is a rather touristy area - but then you are a tourist so thats fine. <BR> <BR>If you wanted to stay a bit further out, in an area which is known as the Londoners place to go out - lots of pubs, clubs, restaurants, etc then I recommend Fulham Broadway. The clubs there are frequented by the famous. Also its a nice area, not too far from the river and not too far from the City. <BR>

Sam, there is nothing like London for "clearing the head" from work. Great city! I like to stay in the touristy area by Queensway(cheap not great hotel area), but it is right by the tube and on the edge of Hyde Park. Try Plaza on the Hyde Park Hotel. Or something in the area. It is a little more quiet at that end and it is great for strolls in Hyde Park, plus quiet little pubs nearby. <BR>Eurostar will take you to Paris in three hours and you can get info off their website and or call them. If you do a search here on this forum you will find a lot of info on the Eurostar/Rail Europe/Chunnel.

Consider Paddington. Lots of nice B&B's there and very close to Piccadilly Circus and other great things to see and do.

Hi Sam, <BR> <BR>My favourite area would be Bloomsbury or Covent Garden, both quite near each other. Bloomsbury has more hotels and is cheaper, but still within walking distance of the WestEnd. I have stayed at various places in London over the years and the area I find myself returning to is Nottington Hill Gate. I have rented an apartment abount 1/2 miles from the Tube station and have learned what buses to take. Lots of places to eat. As far as I am concerned, it doesn't matter that much where you stay as the tube will get you to wherever you want to go. To me, London is a state of mind and it does't matter where I stay so much as just being their. Have fun and plan on doing lots of walking. <BR>

We just got back from the UK 10 days ago and while in London this time we stayed at the London Grards Hotel on Lancaster Gate. This is located just north of Hyde Park and near two tube stations. Around the corner on Bayswater is The Swan, a nice pub that serves good food at reasonable prices. <BR>You can find them on the web at <BR>http://www.demon.co.uk/hotel-uk/guards.html, we paid 87 pounds per night for a double. <BR> <BR>Another good hotel also on Lancaster Gate is the Park Court. A little more expensive but nice. <BR> <BR>Have fun in London, I can't wait to get back.
