Just go to www.sj.se and bok the afternoon train, 15:29 (1425 Sats) arriving Oslo 21:36 (2026 Sats). Then take a bottle of wine, a good book, ipod, and chill.
Far less stressful (and up to 90% better for the environment) than 4 stressful hours of taxis/buses/trains to the airport, check-ins, security, and delayed flights.
The train is centre to centre, no seatbelts to starp you in, buffet car available. Theres also a daily morning train, 0829 arriving Oslo 14:36.
If you pre-book there should be some competitve deals available too, without the xtra costs of getting to and from airports.

man in seat 61 makes a lot of sense to me! And what do we go to Europe for? To see airports or the countryside between destination cities. In July the sun will have not set before reaching Oslo and you'll see what the countryside of Sweden and Norway looks like (and no you are not in Minnesota anymore!)

Having driven across Sweden in daylight I would say it looks a lot like western Michigan -- pine trees, boulders, rustic homes.
Ditto Man_in_seat_61. Take the train. Relax. Bring a Rummikub game. You'll probably pick up some new friends.

Each of us views the tradeoffs differently.
When we did the trip a couple of years ago, we priced the train to ARN, air to Oslo (including bag fees, if any), train to city vs. train from city center to city center. We did not consider night train because I am a light sleeper and while it would save the cost of the hotel room, for me it would be the same as sitting up in an airport.
We found cheap advance purchase train fares online that made the train trip cost less than the air trip, but it was a bit longer city center to city center travel time. We decided on the train trip. The countryside was not very interesting. We were able to walk around, read etc. There was a heat wave that June and there was no air conditioning on the train, so everyone was miserably hot. On the return trip, an electrical storm had interfered with the electric trains, so we were stopped on a siding for several hours in the heat. Not our best train experience, but hopefully an unusual event.

What the heck is a Rummikub game?
PalenQ: Where have you been for the past 40 years? Rummikub is a very good board game. You need to know how to count to 30 to get started. From there is is luck and manipulation.
