Overnight stay in Napoli
 

We are flying out of Naples airport at the beginning of September and want to know what would be the best and safest hotel in Napoli to stay in. We will get there a day before we have to leave so we can explore a little, but then have to leave for the airport at 4:30 in the morning. We are coming back from staying a week in Positano and a week in Praiano, so we do not want to stay in Sorrento, which I know some have recommended.

We have stayed in hotels within walking distance of the airport terminal and felt safe. We also stayed in cheap ones because we didn't want to pay much when we were leaving early. If this is also your thinking, try Millennium Gold. We had wheeled luggage and walked to the terminal - took about 15-20 minutes.

If you have not been before, Naples is an incredibly easy airport to navigate.

No need to stay near the airport, as a hotel in the city will be a brief taxi drive at a set fare. I highly recommend the Hotel Piazza Bellini, which a kind fodorite recommended to me.

It is walking distance to the archaeological museum and other sights.

I second the Hotel Piazza Bellini, we spent three nights there and loved it.
It is just a short walk to the Archeological museum which is really worth seeing.

We stayed at the hotel piazza Bellini and we also enjoyed it. They had a car pick us up at the airport, which was a luxury, but after a very long day of flying it was so nice to see our name and a driver there. If you want to spend the money, around $40.00, The hotel could arrange this. The hotel is in a great location.

They will arrange a taxi for you even at 4:30. They did for us.

They gave us a voucher for the taxi and they arrange the price. E16.
You will not get this price if they do not make the arrangement.

They also will arrange a taxi from anywhere in the city.
We decided to go sight seeing one day but did not care to walk back to the hotel. We called them, we told the where we were and arranged a meeting place and the taxi came to pick us up.

Try to get a room with a balcony. Very nice view. If you make arrangements for the room directly with them they treat you to a glass of whatever and a package of local pasta.

P.S. Great and famous Napoli pizza joints in the area of the hotel. Delicious and very inexpensive.

Add me to the list of those recommending Hotel Piazza Bellini. We stayed for a few days and it was quite nice with great breakfast but you'll leaving before they start service.

We ate a 2 nearby restaurants. One was just as you walked from hotel, out to the street. "The L'Etto -
The first weight based restaurant in town, an interactvie place where you choose what to eat, how much to eat, how much to spend".It is a buffet, but the food is constantly being replenished and cooked in small batches.

There was another nice little spot also very close to where the hotel met the street, but the name escapes me.

We are looking into Piazza Bellini, but felt La Ciliegina Lifestyle Hotel was in a more convenient location for things we wanted to see. Has anyone stayed there???

Yes, you will as it's a set fee. You just need to ask for the fixed rate which is 16€ from the center. It's 19€ from the port. Some of the basic rates for Naples are on this link.

The Hotel Piazza Bellini is not the only one in Naples but it would seem that way with so many posters staying there and recommending it - however it is nice - if very expensive.
The La Ciliegina is also a good choice - very modern decor and it's closer to the port, the Lungomare (waterfront) and sights like Palazzo Reale and Castel Nuovo.
Naples' Historic Centre and areas frequented by tourists such as the Santa Lucia district and Vomero are all very close to each other. You could stay down on the waterfront and wake up to a view of Vesuvius and Capri and yet still be within walking distance of the Archaeological Museum (about 25 minute walk). A few hotels I would recommend are the Partenope Relais, the Hotel Rex, the Hotel Miramare (all three are on the water), The Il Convento in the Spanish Quarter and the Decumani Hotel de Charme smack bang in the middle of the historic centre's tiny streets.

If you're looking in the expensive - very expensive category, you might also look at Hotel Excelsior on Via Partenope, the waterfront. The Excelsior has large guest rooms, some with tiny terraces overlooking the waterfront and Castello Nuovo. There's also a lovely rooftop terrace where you can relax or have a drink while taking in a panoramic view of Naples.

Thanks for that information. But when I came in to the airport and could not get my phone to work to call the hotel I just took the next available taxi.
They wanted E30. Of course I did not know about any set fee and I also did not pay them the E30. It was an official taxi, I believe, and I said no and I did give him E20. Maybe that is why he did not give me a hard time when I gave him the money.

Blueeyedcod and WWK. I know that I did not consider the Bellini so expensive. So I compared random dates for both the Bellini and the La Cilliegina for the same dates. The Bellini was E72 and the Cilliegina $206.

Of course, being close to where one wants to be is very important and should factor into the hotel location.

An overnight stay in Naples is NOT ENOUGH!!

Waldo, I totally agree with you. So we will have to come back another time. We are normally slow tourists and like to hang somewhere for days or a week, but this is all we could do for now.

A sample is better than nothing. I hope you enjoy your stay. Some people stay a night and flee, never to return - they usually choose the wrong location (near the station and the modern business zone are just yuck - ugly, littered and nothing to see).
If you get a chance, do take a walk along the Lungomare - one of the best sea front walks in the world. Explore the little castle (Castel dell Ovo) - it's free to visit the rooftop and you'll get some incredible photos across the bay and toward Vesuvius.

Blueeyedcod is totally right. Take some time however brief to enjoy the beautiful waterfront. But skip the overpriced and mostly mediocre seafood restaurants near the Castello unless someone here has a personal recommendation.

Palazzo Decumani in Naples was recommended to us by our hotel on Capri.
