Overnight/Sleep Trains
 

I will be in Italy in September. I have been looking at train schedules on the treinitalia website. How does one know whether the train you choose has a sleep cabin? Do they all have cabins or just certain trains? I see all these different symbols for trains but can't interpret them, such as INC, E, R, etc. What do they mean/what are the differences? As I am planning my itinerary, I would like to know which trains I am going to be able to sleep on and which of those I can not.

Here's an example:

At www.trenitalia.com enter Venice to Salerno at 18:00

You will get (1) IC, ES* and ICN
They are InterCity, Express and Intercity Night trains, respectively.

Click on the number 1.

In the "accomdations" column, slide your pointer over the symbols. It will tell you what they mean.

Go back to the schedules.

Click on 3. This is the Express Night Train [E].

Again point the mouse to the symbols. This train has 1cl and 2cl couchettes.

If it goes overnight, it almost certainly has beds/couchettes (some of them only have beds/couchettes, no seats). I'm trying to think of an exception, but I also think that if it has an N in the designation, it's a night train.

NZ: NachtZug (NightTrain, in German, though you probably won't see any of those if you stay only in Italy)
