Overnight recommendation

I would like a recommendation for an overnight stop between Alsace and Amsterdam. We are driving and have considered Luxemburg but think that there probably are more interesting stops. Dave

Definitely agree on there being more interesting things than Luxembourg; I was there for about 6 hours once, and that was way more than enough, it's expensive and the people, at least in the city and if you don't speak French or Luxembourgish (a bastardization of German; German doesn't count, they'll pretend they don't speak it), are rather unpleasant. It is rather beautiful, for about 30 minutes. As for other places, Cologne is sort of on the way, and definitely interesting enough for a night, and Brussels is as well, though on a rather different route (haven't been to Brussels, but I've heard you can definitely get a night out of it).

Oh, and Trier is also on the way, and certainly interesting enough for a night (the most extensive Roman ruins north of the Alps, and the house where Marx was born, plus vineyards).

Dear Dave,

We stopped in Vianden, Lux on our drive between Amsterdam and Germany. Pretty town with a castle crowning the hill. We found it to be a great spot for an overnight.

Definitely consider Vianden. Also think about Brugge.
