Overnight in Segovia
I'll have 6 nights in Madrid and I'm trying to decide about day trips. Since I've been in Madrid before I thought that a possibility might be to go to Segovia and spend one night there. Is Segovia the kind of place where it makes a difference to experience the town at night or it's not a big deal? Would it be better to spend the night when I go to Toledo? Recommendations of hotels in Segovia and Toledo would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi, Maria,
I spent a night in Segovia in a trip to Madrid a few years ago in the month of December, and although it was pretty cold and wet there were still lots of people out at night and a very romantic atmosphere, lots of old mansions and winding roads and a certain romanesque church,San Millán, by one of the main squares that was beautifully iluminated at night.
I think it´s definitely worth a stop.
The Alcazar castle is just gorgeous, when you see it from below the hill that the city is perched on, it looks like a ship or something out of Sleeping Beauty.

I stayed at the unmmemorable Hotel Los Arcos, just in the outskirts of town,
but I walked by the Hotel Los Linajes
and it looks very nice, in the middle of the old town. Good pictures and rates at www.hotelcity.com.
Also I´ve heard great things about the
Infanta Isabel, right by the cathedral.
It´s in the Karen Brown guide and website ,www.karenbrown.com ,and in the wonderful www.innsofspain.com

We spent one night in Segovia last March at the Infanta Isabel. The location can not be beat and the room was very nice. We enjoyed the atmosphere of Segovia - it was unlike any other town we visited (We did Madrid and Andalusia on this trip). The aqueduct is absolutely fascinating. You also must eat at Meson Candid (unless you are vegetarian, of course)

We stayed at Los Linjares with views, including a balcony looking over the patio and countryside. The photos of the countryside and sunset are amazing. Personally I'd stay a night over in Toledo as well as Segovia and take a day off Madrid, and I'll second the restaurant suggestion. We loved Segovia. Judy

Forgot to mention the Hostal del Cardenal in Toledo, a former Cardinal's palace built just inside the walls. Very old Spain, lovely gardens, antiques, good breakfast and next door to an excellent restaurant, I believe, of the same name. Judy

Maria,
In my last visit to Spain October 2001 we spent 2 nights each in Toledo, Madrid and Segovia and daytripped to El Escorial and Avila.

I felt like we got to see plenty of Madrid in 2 days but I'm not a big museum person and didn't spent an entire day at the Prado or Reina Sofia. We visited both of these museums, the Palace, spent alot of time in the Plaza Mayor/Puerto del Sol/Plaza Santa Ana area and even saw a bullfight. I would definately not have given up one minute of Toledo or Segovia for more time in Madrid especially if you're already visited Madrid.

In Segovia we stayed at the Hotel Infanta Isabel. It was 19800 for BOTH nights in a double room. I requested a view of the cathedral and our room overlooked the Plaza Mayor with an incredible cathedral view. Service was excellent and it was just charming. We had to try the roast suckling pig at both Candides and Meson Duque. All of us thought Meson Duque's was much better than Candides. We felt like "a number" at Candides and the staff was not very friendly. The aquaduct and alcazar were must-sees and the Church of Veracruz (I believe that's the name) just outside of the center was very unique - an old Knights Templar church.

We went to Toledo as our first stop in Spain and stayed at the hotel Pintor El Greco, in the Juderia. It was 73 euros per night. I wasn't particularly impressed by our room - it was clean and comfortable but nothing special with a view of construction on the building next door. I have to give them a break though - we had a party of 2 reservation and at the very last minute there were 3 of us. We really enjoyed the Monesterio San Juan de los Reyes near the hotel. The caretaker gave us a special tour and let us take pictures inside. On the outside of the church you can see the chains hanging on the church that were used to hang people from during the Inquisition!

Hope this helps. Have a wonderful trip.

Thank you all for the comments/recommendations. I'll try to squeeze in as much as I can!

Question for Judy: In the "Los Linajes" hotel, did you request that specific room when you made your reservation or you just lucked out? If I want that view , is there a certain room category I should refer to in my communications with the hotel? Thanks!
