Overnight in Rome
 

Our Italian honeymoon will begin with a night in Rome. We will be arriving in Rome by noon and will leave the next day for Praiano and the Amalfi Coast.

My plan is for us to see the main sites in the city center the afternoon/early evening of our arrival (get to bed early as we'll be pooped!) and maybe see any of the main sites we missed in the am before we head to the AC.

This is the only part of our trip that will truly be limited to site-seeing. And I truly believe we will be back to ROme to really experience it, but for now... yeah, it is mostly about seeing the amazing old city!

I am looking at hotels near the Colloseum. These seem convenient for our arrival and departure from Termini, and are within walking distance of the main sites we want to see.

We will be there in early Oct... considering Hotel Paba (135E) and Hotel Italia (110E) on Rick Steve's recs.

I welcome all comments and suggestions on our itinerary and hotel selection.

Since you plan to return to Rome on another trip (and you will) and this is your honemoon after all, my suggestion is to limit your sightseeing to a minimum. You'll be jet lagged and "pooped" as you wrote and sightseeing would be exhausting at best.

I would limit your visits to maybe one locale...the colliseum and Roman Forum perhaps and then plan a romantic meal in one of the many Roman trattoria choices.

The next day, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, sit in a sidewalk cafe and enjoy people watching and cappuchino and head for the Amalfi Coast.

The first night of a honeymoon starting in Rome must include the Trevi Fountain after dark.

You might start your time there with a hop-0n hop-off bus. I'm not a major fan of them, but it probably would give you a quick peak of the city.
Since it's Oct. it'll get dark early. I'd leave my hotel and plan on not going back until after dinner.
I'd go to the Piazza Navona area and walk some, enjoy a drink and people watch and just soak up a little bit of Rome. Have dinner walk to Trevi and the Spanish Steps. Then taxi back to your room.
The next morning go to the forum and take an English speaking tour. You could possibly get a tour of the Colloseum as well.

any recs for a good, but not overpriced, dinner near the trevi fountain and spanish steps?

You don't need to necessarily eat there. You can choose a restaurant near/at Navona/Fiori and still enjoy a nice walk to Trevi.
However, since it will be dark before you eat (dinners are after 7,usually around 8pm), you might take an early evening stroll towards Trevi/ Spanish Steps and then eat in that area.
I generally eat in other areas and the only restaurant I went to there was an overpriced overrated one.
Although chilly, you may find an outdoor one with a heater (many of them near Navona).
