Overnight in Bad Reichenhall?

This Juy, after landing in Munich we'll be driving from Munich to Bad Aussee and considering changing locations for our first night stay from Salzburg to Bad Reichenhall. We still would have a whole day to finish the drive to Salzburg and sightsee, right? We don't need to check into the place in B.A. until later in the day and this town looks very nice on the internet.

I seem to remember Bad Reichenhall as an appealing train stop (a bazillion years ago). It will certainly be a more relaxing first night's recovery from your flight than battling on to Salzburg and city traffic. Just think, you'll arrive sooner, in a much quieter place, you can find a shady biergarten and relax. It gets my vote. J.

The important consideration is what day of the week you will be making the drive. If you land on a Friday or Saturday, this can be prime time for the autobahn going from Munchen to the Salzburg area and you could end up in bumper to bumper traffic for many miles.
If your reason is because you will be tired from a long flight, then stay closer to Munich....we've crashed at the Munich in Freising a few times after flying overnite. We have also done the drive from Munich to B'gaden and it can be done - just you will be tired. Personally, if I made it as far as Bad Reichenhall I would keep going. One other consideration is that you pick a place that allows one night stays - a lot of innkeepers in this area simply will not take a one night stay. Another choice is to rent your car in Salzburg and take the train in from Munich - that way you can sleep on the train.

Sorry, meant to say the Marriott in Freising

Thanks jmw and emily. I found a place called Pension Erika that looks very relaxing for our first night in B.R. but yes, we are arriving on a Friday.

But reading Emily's comments would sure make me reconsider hitting the autobahn after a long flight. The train from the flughafen gets to Salzburg in just over two hours with one change at Munich. How early does your plane land? I wonder if getting a really early start would make a difference. Good luck with your decision. J.

Good thots I know..our plane gets in 1030 am so we just need to pick up our rental car and go. I figure the autob. will be busier in the PM like ours and Sat. may be worst.

Sounds like you've made up your mind then; good for you. Have you found a reservation in BR for one night? I do hope you'll return here to tell you how you like the town. Thanks. J.

JMW, I have confirmed with a nice little place (as far as I can tell) called Pension Erika. Thanks for your input, all advice is appreciated.

OK, if you are determined to make the drive the quicker that you leave the airport..the better. Send one person to get the car rental and the other to get the bags..the car rental lines can be long when a USA flight lands..
Have fun and good luck!
