Overnight between Toledo and Granada: Where?
 

Where should we spend a Saturday night (October 29) between Toledo and our next stop, Granada, where our desired apartment is not available until Sunday afternoon?

We'll arrive at Madrid airport from Marseille at 1 PM on Thursday, October 27. Current plan is to rent a car and drive to Toledo, where we'd stay that night and (after a full day of museums and churches) Friday night as well.

We will leave for Granada on Saturday AM.

We'd like to visit Baeza and Ubeda en route. Yes, we could stay in one of those towns Saturday night.

But is there any other interesting spot between Toledo and Granada where we might stay the night? Some place with dramatic scenery or some historical or cultural interest?

We already have 2 nights planned in Toledo, which seems quite abundant, so I don't want to extend in Toledo.

Another suggestion is Almagro, between Ciudad Real and Valdepenas, a compact historical town with some good restaurants. I found it a pleasant place, good for a stroll.

That looks very interesting -- local castles, the municipal and (older) courtyard theatres, the parador....

I wanted two full days in Toledo, which could easily be more than two nights would allow.

I would spend the night in Úbeda, at the Parador, and stop in Almagro on the way day, as it's only a 1-1/2 hr drive from Toledo. You'll also be able to stop and see the windmills at Consuegra. The castle is now open for visits and the "Rose of Saffron Festival" is celebrated at the end of the month.

The Parador in Ubeda was sold out in mid-October for our trip last year, several months in advance. I kept trying but no luck. But we had a couple of meals and some drinks there during our two nights in Ubeda, and really enjoyed it.

If you can get a room then go for it!
We ended up in a small hotel around the block from the Parador.

It's a bit tricky to drive to, at least it was for us. We wound up parking along ring road Calle Cortina, not far from the Puerta de Granada (I think as I'm looking at the map now), and walked over to the hotel with our bags.

Some fun tapa bars along that stretch of road with great views out to the olive groves and distant Cazorla mountains.

good advice from Robert. Almagro is too close to stop to sleep. If Tembleque is ON THE WAY ( haven't looked at map) stop to see that lovely plaza as you are "in the area".

Baeza/Ubeda are spectacular.

The Ubeda parador has availability (as has the one in Almagro. I take the point that the latter town may be too close to my departure point.)

Good news on the Ubeda Parador. I looked at the map again and where we actually parked was along the Calle Redonda de Miradores, an easy drive and a 5 minute walk to the Parador.

What about a hotel in Baeza?
