overnight between Galway and Dublin
hello again my fodor lifelines
if we decide to drive from Galway to Dublin in one day ,can we be accused of insanity? if so what is a recommended town to overnight? |
Not a very hard drive. You are on the N-6 most of the way. I did it once a couple of years ago, Dublin to Galway. Figure on five hours with a stop for lunch along the way. Have fun

I do it all the time. No problem. You can even break up the trip with a stop at Clonmacnoise. They have a nice cafe there and the monastic ruins right on the Shannon River are majestic.

Once you get out of Galway, and before you go into Dublin, it's a fairly easy drive. In perfect conditions, which are rare, it would take less than three hours. I would allow four hours from the centre of Galway to the centre of Dublin (but add a bit if it were time-critical).
On a tourism schedule, I would make time for Clonmacnoise, as IrishEyes suggests. Perhaps also Locke's Distillery at Kilbeggan. I don't like any town on the route well enough to spend a night there by choice. |
The roads have hugely improved in the last few years and I generally do the drive in under 3 hours. It is a motorway or duel carriageway for most of the journey so if you are expecting charming country roads you will be disappointed!
I wouldn't be tempted to break it up with an overnight - I usually just stop for coffee in one of the towns along the way (and still did it in 3 hours at Christmas including a 30min coffee break). |
