Over night Transportation from Venice to Rome?
 

Hi, I'm going to Italy this coming September and my flight back to state is in the early morning in Rome. I'll be in Venice before that so instead of renting a room in Rome for extra night, I was wondering if I can take a train or bus overnight coming down to Rome from Venice. Do you think this is possible and reasonable plan?
I would love to hear your recommandations. Thanks guys.

I would suggest taking the last train out of Venice, it will take you about 3 to 31/2 hours to get to Rome and hang out in the terminal. I did this in May when I was in Florence. Arrival is about 1:00 a.m. You will need to take a taxi to the airport for about 45 euro.

There are several downsides to this.
1. If you have to go to the bathroom, you will need to take your luggage with you.
2. there are few couches to stretch out on.

On the other hand, there is a coffee shop that opens very early so at least you can get some cafe and brioche.

Looking at Trenitalia's website, you can take the 00:04 ICN train from Venezia S. Lucia, which arrives in Roma Tiburtina station (note: NOT Termini) at 06:56.

From Tiburtina station, you can take the Metropolitan train to FCO.

The 22.06 from MESTRE would get you into Fiumicino at 05.48, with changes at Bologna and Roma Tiburtina.

The 00.04 from S. LUCIA which YK mentions would get you into FCO at 07.48, connecting at Tiburtina.

What time do you need to be there?

Gen Haines has previously mentioned here a strategy for the reverse route of intentionally "over-shooting" so that the ride provides something more closely ressembling a night's sleep on the train (i.e., go on to Triest, I think he advises, and then come back to Venice, and you will arrive closer to breakfast time) - - so I guess you could do something like this in reverse. In other words, go from Venice to Triest, and then take an overnight train from Triest to Rome.

But what is a flight that leaves in the "early morning"? Do you mean before 8 am? which in turn means the need to get to the airport at 6 am or earlier, which means the need to be at termini at 5 or earlier?

Personally, I would take the dinner-hour train from Venice to Rome.

And I am fairly cavalier when taking intinerary "timing risks".
