>>>All I know is, insurance companies will jump on any little thing to try to get out of paying a claim<<<

Did anyone pay attention to this post?

Brokers don't care because they just want to make their commission. Insurance companies on the other hand read through contracts with a fine-tooth comb and will happily deny a claim based on the smallest of technicalities.

Have the posters who list a different country of orgin been sucessful in making damage claims?

And what is the moral distinction between lying about your country of origin on a car rental application, and sneaking a third person into a double room at a chain hotel?

Hey, guess what? Airline ticket fares are also extremely variable depending on the country of purchase. Now that e-tickets are the norm for every airline of the world, it is something to think about.

Air France-KLM fares are among the things that have us laughing in Europe. If you buy an Air France ticket in the Netherlands for any routing anywhere in the world, it is much cheaper than if you buy it in France. If you buy a KLM ticket for any routing anywhere in the world in France, it is much cheaper than if you buy it in the Netherlands.

Of course, everybody knows that it is the same airline.

Isn't the internet wonderful?

As I read this, people are not lying about their country of origin on their applications; they are putting their correct address on the application. They are just using different websites to find different rates. Using a website that has a .uk as opposed to a a .com suffix does not mean you are lying about your country of origin.

I am assuming from all of this discussion that it is much cheaper to rent a car before going to Europe than after you get there. Is that right?

Also, if you call the Autoeurope toll-free number, can you say that you want to rent using a rate from the UK site even if you're American? Or is it better to do that from the site itself.

If you call in the U.S. they try every trick in the book to scare you away from renting through the European sites. They are clearly working on commission.

Just another tip for renting-my husband and I were in Ireland this past weekend and had reserved a manual as the automatics were coming up as over 200euros more expensive. When we got to the rental agency, we used Budget Ireland, they offered us an automatic for an extra 4 euros/day (for our 4 day stay)! I'm not sure if this always happens, but it sure saved us a lot of money!

This post got me thinking....so went to check my AutoEurope 26 day reservation for Lisbon pick up and put in country of residence as Portugal....did get better rate.

Better yet an ad on the side of the site was for Economycarrental.com.
I entered my desired reservation for 26 days but did put in USA resident. Everything included was a rate of about $125 savings. Now waiting to see if AutoEurope will match....and I always thought they came up with the best rates.

I am just wondering how the AutoEurope vouchers would go through with the booking if one states the country of residence as UK rather than US....what about charging on a US based credit card?
Wouldn't that be a tip off to the company?

Well I just did the exact same thing for a rental in Spain.

US Rate was $409. UK Rate as 391 pounds. hmmm.....

Outrage can work both ways apparently! LOL!

BTW I find that I can get better deals by going direct to Avis or Budget in Italy, relative to what AutoEurope offered. (Yes, I know they'll meet or beat). Will post details when I'm finished with my researches.

I've also found that the Belguim, Spanish, and other European rates for AutoEurope (didn't try all, however), are higher than the US site rates.

If you want to call Auto Europe, I'm sure they will explain the differences in the rates as they did when I called. It's fairly simple, each country and rental car provider has their own rules as to discounts, upgrades and insurance coverage.

As Auto Europe is a broker, it must comply with each of the different agreements. Kemwel, which is their sister company, has separate agreements because they are based in a different company then Auto Europe, so the rates and agreements will be different. It can be confusing, but what can I say?

Americans, and it seems our Canadian cousins, have the unique advantage that VISA and MC can act as the 1st insurer when renting a car, thus allowing you to waive the CDW, which has a very expensive deductible. On the other hand, Amex does offer a great insurance coverage for members even if you do not waive the CDW.

ok, i just did a test for the car rental i'm interested in greece. I tried the autoeurope sites from UK, Ireland, Canada, USA, and Australia.

Australia was the cheapest, followed by the US site.

Ireland, UK and Canada were all more expensive!!
(Yes, i converted everything to US dollars before I compared...)

maybe autoeurope has been reading this thread...
