Outdated GBP
I have found 3 20GBP notes that appear to be the "old" notes that have now been replaced. How do I go about exchanging these?
Many Thanks for your help. |
Pretty sure you can exchange those for new bank notes at any bank. I did that back in May 2008.
|
There doesn't seem to be any announcement on the Bank of England website that it has ceased to be "legal tender". Even when it has, you can still make a trip to London and go to the Bank of England:
http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/bankn...enty/index.htm (come to think of it, banks can do it too). |
I did like yk did last winter - went to a bank and they exchanged it. But yes, like old francs, etc at some day they may become worth the paper they are printed on, or less.

"But yes, like old francs, etc at some day they may become worth the paper they are printed on, or less"
On the Dulux again, are we? A Bank of England banknote is a promise to pay the amount concerned. Defaulting on promises might be fine for Johnny Continental, or in the paint-swilling colonies. But it's not how we do business here. The promise is valid for all time. Concher, or Concher's g-g-g-g-grandchildren will, till global warming turns England into a desert, be able to take ANY Bank of England note to the Bank and get - well, another banknote in return. |
So flanneur - my old schilling coins and 10 schilling notes i have i can take into any bank and exchange for today's currency. And i do have several schilling notes, etc.
|
Send them to me, and I will replace them with 3 crisp new $20 bills.
|
You'd have to ask the Austrian government about those, Pal...
|
GBP is monopoly money now. doesn't much matter.
|
Was $1.49 last Friday - no wonder i heard some German shopkeepers a while back were refusing to take UK-issued charge cards for purchases - small stores i guess - even though card issuer guarantees payments
Pretty soon GBP will be better than the typical TP in British loos and worth about the same. |
Schillings, Pal? You'll have to ask the Austrians about them.
If you mean shillings, can you see the words "I promise to pay the bearer on demand" on them somewhere? And concher, they're worthless, your notes. Just send them to me and I'll get rid of them for you:) |
Wicked, Sheila ;)
Concher - If you mean this one, it's still in circulation and accepted in all shops. http://www2.hmc.edu/~groves/bill.jpg No need to waste time exchanging them in banks ... Steve |
Oops - you'll have to copy/paste that
|
Don't try to use this one, though: http://tinyurl.com/6j6eq4

$1.49 seems fairly average, since I remember both parity and the $2 pound in the not too distant past.
|
I remember the $2.80 pound, the 1760 francs pound....
But in terms of what you could actually buy, it all comes out in the wash, so to speak. |
I remember when a Pound was worth more than FOUR US Dollars....before Flanner was born, of course.
|
"before Flanner was born, of course"
Alas, not so. I was born back in those absurd days when the economy was sacrificed to keep the pound at $4.03. Countries overseas had their deposits in sterling. If we devalued, we'd impoverish them, went the argument. |
The perils of running a currency that happens to be in world demand as a reserve, you see... Something to be said for being Molvania.
|
I have had a revelation. That prick walkingaround is in fact PalQ.
It's obvious when you think about it - they're both mad, and both hate britain and know nothing about it. |
