Our First Trip to Bavaria

My husband and I will spend 3 days in Munich, then, travel to Schliersee where we will spend 7 days. We will return to Munich on a Friday and fly back to Singapore on a Sunday.

We plan to look around Schliersee and Salzburg during the 7 days. Can someone advise if we should rent a car or use public transport. If we plan to visit Salzburg, should we spend at least one night in Salzburg? What are the must see areas in Salzburg if we have two full days and one night? Where else can we drive to near Schliersee if we do hire a car?

Thank you.

Rent a car, this gives you more flexibility and you can see more.

Around Salzburg you should visit Berchtesgaden and Chiemsee, too.

Even though public transit will take you anywhere you want to go yes a car is nice -Salzburg great and drive to the Lakes District (a k a The Sound of Music Country).

For a look at trains - like getting from airport in Munich to lake - by train use Bavarian Pass -35 euros or so for two and unlimited regional trains and most buses - and you can go to Salzburg on it too- sources of info: www.bahn.de/en - www.ricksteves.com; www.seat61.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com. Bavarian Passes bought at stations - no need to pre-book.

Hopefully swandav2000 will see your post as she is a real expert on the area, living in Garmisch and always IME helpful and willing to give her great advice.

I would drop Berchtesgade and do Garmish Prtenkirchen instead.

Yes Chiemsee would be great - venue of Mad Ludwig's 'Versailles' - lovingly set on an island in this placid lake - drive to train or bus to Prien to catch boats to the island:

No hassle of relocating for one night - Salzburg is compact - a day there is enough or come back another day.
