I understand it is a special ( and probably delicious), cuisine , but the food does not look
appetizing to me at all:
drab in colour , covered in slime- like foam.>>

i think Danon, given the reputation of the restaurant, that we might give the food the benefit of the doubt, don't you? at least until we have read the OP's descriptions of what it tasted like.

After all, you wouldn't immediately look at a lump of beef or a chicken, or indeed an oyster, and think "yum" would you?

whilst we might not all of us want [or indeed be able] to spend that sort of money to eat there, i for one am very curious to read about it.

And at $400-500 a meal I would wager that the food would be fairly tasty, right? Or even hi-falutin folk would not go there.

I just finished watching the No Reservations episode on the restaurant, and the food on the show, at least, looked very appetizing. Incredible creativity - as annhig said, I doubt I'll ever eat a meal like that, but I want to hear about it!

Obviously, the OP is excited and thrilled that she could spend an evening at El Bulli. Why not give her this. Often, saying less is best.

Tower, thank you ever so much for offering support for the El Bulli experience. My husband and I are constructing a web site where we can share our photos and extensive descriptions of people, places, and FOOD. Some of our most exciting moments were driving into the unknown to merge bedazzled by the richness of the events.
Please be patient, we want to offer to you a fun trip report that might transport you as others have right to the very spot written about.
Smiles

I over estimated my ability to create and send to you a trip report by Sunday. It is my birthday and I am being whisked off for celebrations.
I will work on it during the week..sorry.

we also have reservations at Tickets. I have been watching a fabulous culinary series on the Food Network: "From Spain with Love". There are a few more episodes to go. Maybe there will be reruns. It certainly has given me lots of ideas for Barcelona and Spanish cuisine. I recommend it highly.

Oh..as a many of you have guessed, said, and postulated the cost for our dining experience at El Bulli....
DRUM ROLL PLEASE..
It was a grand total of 745 Euro, which when converted to US currency equalled $1,070.00.
So very well worth the 51/2 hours of eating unique morsels.
Thank you for your interest. I am now signing off and going to continue the Birthday festivities.

richardsonsnm,
Be prepared to be scolded by at least several posters.
How can anyone dare not to worship at the altar of the extravagance and food snobbery !

My loving husband said..."To each his own!"
The restaurant commanded a definite respect. It is not everything to everybody..only a lovely experience that allows one to be "out of the box." We certainly enjoyed the complete package of the town of Roses, the water, the people and to have an open mind to thrust ourselves into a fortunate experience as El Bulli. Every day we have a blessing to be...then there is the experience to reach way past the everyday and WOW have a super memory.
Food is personal.

We ate El Bulli in 2000 with our two sons, now 17 and 20. It was very difficult to get a reservation even then. Lunch was about $85 per person, and worth every peseta - hands down the most memorable meal we've ever had.

Our older son, who was almost ten at the time, ordered and ate the entire prix fixe menu of 32 courses, including monkfish liver and mushroom foam.

Our younger son had steak and fries, which the kitchen staff prepared just for him, even though they normally didn't offer kids' meals.

When we finished dining (after four hours), our waiter said that Ferran Adria wanted to meet us. We were escorted to the kitchen, where Ferran took us on a tour and presented our kids with a signed cookbook - He said that our son was the first kid who had eaten everything on the menu.

The four of us watched the Bordain show together last night. Our younger son was especially melancholy that El Bulli was closing. He said he now regrets ordering the steak, and wishes he could return.

Yahoo for your son and super you for taking the trip to El Bulli!
The boys will always have something unique to share when old enough to know the value of that experience. As parents you are special to have offered to them that opportunity..bravo.
We too are sad the restaurant is now closed since now so many people are salivating for the unique.

Can't believe the amount of miserable-gittery in some comments here. I will be very grateful to read more about your El Bulli experience, since I never managed it myself and look forward to following your blog. Thank you for sharing it with us ! I also hope you had a wonderful birthday.

As for carping about the cost - we all choose to spend or money in different ways. Paying this amount for a meal isn't just for the super wealthy, it's also for those of more modest means who would rather spend the money on the best meal in the world and economise on other things. For example I currently like to spend money on a meal at the best restuarant in my home town once a year, annual visits to Venice and art - but I've never had a car.
