Dear Tuck and Rufus,
Thank you both very much for the information. I'm definitely going to spend some time researching exactly what is open in February castle/museum wise, and I will report back in case anyone else ever plans a random mid-winter trip!
Rufus, I saw several of your postings about Bamberg yesterday. Given the option, would you spend your last day/night there and miss Wurzburg? I don't believe we would have time to adequately see both since we would be driving in from Rothenburg that morning... Our flight leaves FRA at 2:15pm the next day so we don't have to be extremely close to the city. I originally picked Wurzburg because I did a short study abroad there several years ago and enjoyed the Residenz, Dom St. Killian, Festung Marienburg, and Kapelle. I'm definitely open to seeing a more charming town though!

For what it's worth - prior to our trip I faced the same choice Wurzburg vs Bamberg and I chose the latter after extensive research. Although I expressed some disappointment here in Bamberg, I think (now that I've gotten my photos back!) that Bamberg was the right choice and that I was wrong in being "disappointed" - perhaps for some subjective reason, I just don't know. I repeat: You'll like it!
