Other than Vienna

I'll be visiting Vienna with my cousin, but i've already been there. Is there anywhere else in the area (within a couple hours) that I should be visiting or that you recommend visiting?

I am going to Prague and Vienna in December. I have been advised that while in Vienna, I should consider trips to Budapest and/or Salzburg. I believe that both are fairly close and easy to get to by train.

How long will you be there?

Salzburg is a bit more than a couple hours unless you fly.

Try Durnstein and the wine country....Melk Abbey....the Danube to Budapest perhaps?

For train schedules see bahn.de. Budapest is a great destination, but at three hours one way it's not that close, and there's so much to see I would save it for a separate visit.

If you really want to get out of Vienna (so much to see there, too), besides a day trip along the Danube to Melk and Krems you could consider Sopron or Bratislava, or possibly Graz.

Graz.

What a lovely town an still quite unknown.

My European manager was from Graz and he often told me I would like it very much. Still haven't been, unfortunately.

We took a day trip by boat from Melk I think to Durnstein. It was beautiful, not too long and mostly Austrians and Germans on board.

Agree Saltzburg and Budapest too long for a day trip--I think each is more than 3 hours by train from Vienna.

On a clear day, take a tram and then a bus to the top of Kahlenberg hill then walk down (easy walk) to one of the wine villages and from there a tram back into the city.

If you like castles and music, you might find Eisenstadt interesting.
There's a Esterhazy palace there, as well as a museum of Haydn.
It was interesting to see his original scores of music.
It's about 30+ miles east of Vienna, beyond the airport.
