Other interesting towns in Belgium?
I have been to Brugge, Brussels, and Ghent. What other towns are interesting to see for its ambience, sights, churches, museums, etc? Thanks in advance.

Dinant, the home of Adolph Sax, inventor of the saxophone, is an interesting town. The town is located on a narrow strip between the river and the mountainous cliffs.
The Citadelle de Dinant sits high above the town on the side of the mountain - you can take the teleferique (cable car) to the top. The Church of Notre Dame was quite impressive from the outside, given it's location in town (we didn't have time to go inside). There is an annual jazz festival in Dinant, in honor of Adolph Sax, I believe in the summer. Here's two web sites for more information. http://www.dinant-tourisme.be/ http://www.dinant.be/ Peace, Robyn :)>- |
Hi Myriam, I want to see Antwerp next year.
|
Leuven. We like it better than Ghent but it's also a university town.
Diest. A small town to walk around in, a few nice restaurants and cafes, no major tourist sights though. Dinant, sad to say, did not impress us at all. Too much grey stone, and it's kind of dirty. Both times we were there, there was quite a bit of trash floating in the river and on the sidewalks. The nearby Jardins d'Annevoie are wonderful though and worth visiting. There is bus service to the gardens from either Dinant or Namur (forget which) but it's much easier to visit with a car. |
We like Ypres (Ieper), if you are at all interested in WW1 history and the town retains a medieval look with it's market square and church.

Yes, I would recommend Antwerp as a daytrip. The city is small, yet there are enough churches (Our Lady's Cathedral, Carolus Borromeus Church, St. Paul's Church, ...) museums (Fashion Museum, Diamond Museum, Museum of Modern Arts, Museum Plantin Moretus, Rubenshuis, Maritime Museum, ...), scenic squares and streets to fill a day. Not to forget lots of cafés to taste some of our famous Belgian beers!
IMO Dinant is too far away from Amsterdam. There's not that much to see, apart from the Citadelle, the church and the river. I second BTilke's suggestion for Leuven. A very pretty city with a lovely Market Square and City Hall, Beguinage, University Library, etc. |
Antwerp, certainly, but Liège is certainly worth a visit for the things you have mentioned.
