Other interesting forums?
I have been following this forum for about six months or so, and I have been impressed with the caliber of the information and entertainment that the 'Fodorites' provide.

It made me wonder if there are other forums out in cyberspace that also have this level intelligent banter. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is - as long as the reading is good.

Any suggestions?

If you're talking about travel forums, none can compare to this one both in terms of both (or either) interesting reading and helpful information. Frommer's website (frommer.com) has "Ask the Experts" feature where you can ask specific questions about a particular area. I've got a couple very helpful responses from them. Otherwise, it's Fodors all the way!

I occasionally look at Lonely Planet Thorn Tree. This forum appeals to young people of the backpacker persuasion. You periodically get posts that are sexually and drug-oriented in a juvenile way (eg. "What country has the hottest women?'' "Where can you get reefer in Johannesburg?"), but these are in a minority. I have posted in this forum to get information *about* places. There are many knowledgeable people following this forum, and there is heavy traffic on it, and it has been helpful. It is not the place, however, to ask questions about tours, cruises, best restaurants, or first class hotels.

Frommer, for me, is a dissappointment. It does not have much traffic, and postings will sit there forever unanswered. That's too bad, because Frommer does fill a niche in adult travel.

Fodors

Dear Mr Nichols,

I find three other fora interesting:
http://www.lonrelyplanet.com, then Thorn Tree, the
East Europe
West Europe

And the newsgroup rec.travel.europe. If your present software doesn't get you newsgroups you can download free software to do so using http://www.freeagent.com.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London

Rick steves has a web site with a Grafitti wall. It is not as good as Fodors but the postings are categorized as to train travel, driving in Europe, are reservations necessary?, packing light, etc. The comments are very informative and people do email each other for more help, similar to the type that you get from Fodors.
