Osuna (Seville)

This post is for those travellers that have already visited the highlights (Seville, Granada…) and are interested in architecture and quieter places far from the coast. Osuna is a big town mid way Seville to Antequera, surrounded by olive fields and right by A-92 motorway. Baroque rules here, with impressive palaces and civil and religious buildings. Outstanding, and open to visitors, the Monasterio de la Encarnación, the Colegiata and the Pantheon of the Dukes of Osuna, with paintings by Zurbaran and Ribera. Calle San Pedro is probably the most beautiful baroque street in Spain, almost every door is a palace. One of these, the Palacio del Marqués de la Gomera was restored and opened as a Hotel I highly recommend, take a look here: http://www.hotelpalaciodelmarques.es/ . I base here when I visit nearby towns full of interest and Baroque buildings: Ecija with its many towers, Fuentes de Andalucía, Marchena, and Estepa. Further are Priego, Baena and Carmona (this one very near Seville, with a Parador), this website may be helpful: http://www.caminosdepasion.com.
Many places to eat well in Osuna, but my choice is Currito, at Calle Carmen.
Next May 17 begins the Osuna Fair, with a horse and carriage parades, and bullfighting.
As a bonus, from May 9 to 31, in the courtyard of Hotel Palacio de la Gomera there shall be an exhibition of watercolours by Malaga artist Jose Gonzalez Bueno: http://www.hotelpalaciodelmarques.es/ -->Ultimas Noticias, and then scroll down.

Take a look around the old Casino, Osuna. Have a drink in one of the windows overlooking the Plaza Mayor.

Just back from Osuna and I'd like to recommend the restaurant at Hotel-Palacio Marqués de la Gomera. I had been eating here previously, but as now it is run by new owners, I did not want to rec. it before trying it myself. We've had an excellent meal, the dishes were abundant and well served, and a nice adjacent open courtyard for smokers.

thanks for posting, Josele - it looks just like the sort of place that we would like very much.

And thanks for the link to your exhibition which you know I would love to see - but I could only find the one picture [the lady on the horse]. Am I doing something wrong?

Ted - Thanks for topping these posts by Josele. I miss him here and would like to see an exhibit of his paintings. Since his full name is here, that makes it easier !
