Ostia Antica: Worth a trip for the afternoon?
 

I haven't read any comments here about Ostia Antica and I am wondering if anyone has made a visit there. Since it is so close to FCO, I was wondering if it would be an interesting place to visit before spending the night at a hotel near FCO.

Went there in March. It's absolutely worth visiting. It's almost as large as Pompeii.

ditto woody. Its a wonderful site. beautiful mosaics and pines, very bucholic after the intensity of Roma. Train from stazione osteniese.

We enjoyed our visit there several years ago. Easy trip from Rome and, as noted above, a bit of a respite from the city. I'm sure you will enjoy it, particularly if you are interested in Roman ruins. There is a small museum on the grounds as well.

Absolutely! It was one of the highlights of our last trip to Rome. We had the place to ourselves on a hot, breezeless August afternoon and nearly fainted when a guy wearing a toga and sandals came around the corner of one of the buildings. He was a waiter at the café on the property, but for about 10 seconds we thought we were in a time warp.

Thanks to everyone for your comments about Ostia Antica. We were totally fascinated by our visit to Pompeii several years ago. The remarks about getting out of the intensity of the city were interesting, too. Thanks again to all for your input.

It was an easy train ride from Rome, and we were glad we went. Since you liked Pompeii, I am sure you will find this rewarding. Because of the trees, it can be more enjoyable on a hot day. As for the cafe waiters in togas, we thought they had an attitude, but then decided maybe anyone wearing those togas may be entitled to an attitude.
