Ostia Antica disability access
 

My dad flies into Rome on Saturday and his cruise starts on Sunday. To fill the time on Saturday, we were thinking of heading to Ostia Antica, as it's near the airport. Is this somewhere you can visit and appreciate in a walker and/or wheelchair? Also, where would you recommend for lodging? Back at the airport, or is there somewhere better?

We went by metro/train, and as I recall the site was accessed via a pedestrian bridge over a large roadway. This involved a lot of steps, and after that it was a walk of several hundred meters. Perhaps one could take a cab from either the train station, or airport and avoid this. The site itself had a lot of rather rough original cobble stone streets, rather than smoothly paved paths.

That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit -- Rome, itself, is full of cobblestones.

I loved Ostia, but to be honest I don't know how handicapped friendly it is. To walk around the ruins in the site you walk along old cobblstone walkways. I don't think a wheelchair would fare very well.

Rome itself is a fabulous city though. He will have a great time there!
