Orvieto Wineries- anyone been to one?

In 2005 we (a group of 8 adults) visited the Falesco winery near Orvieto and Montecchio. One of our party had pre-arranged the tour and tasting. It was fabulous but I'm pretty sure that kind of experience is not available to "just anyone." Our arranger was/is in the business, so I think it was a professional courtesy. On the other hand, it can't hurt to try.

Are you staying overnight in Orvieto? If so, ask your hotel if they can provide any information and assistance in getting an appointment somewhere. Most wineries in Italy do not accommodate drop-in visitors.

No , not staying overnight in Orvieto. We are just planning a day trip from Rome. I do realize that you can't just drop by, which is why I am trying to get info ahead of time.so we can reserve a time.

I'm pretty sure there are enotecas in Orvieto where you can taste and buy local wines...have you been to Orvieto before? It is one of our favorite Italian hilltowns and there is plenty to do in town on a day trip. Last fall we met a couple on the plaza outside one of our fav restaurants - Giglio d'oro - who were there on their second day trip from Rome...they said they were tired of fighting the crowds in Rome and had enjoyed Orvieto so much one day, they decided to do it again the next! (They had spent a week in a villa in Tuscany, and had also stayed a couple nights each in Venice, Florence and were finishing up in Rome. We kind of bonded as we'd just done a week in Rome, then 2 weeks in a tiny Umbrian town. We shared the "highlight" of cooking for ourselves with local provisions, and we also gave them recs for good restaurants in Rome. ). The big cities are wondrous, but sometimes it seems like hard work just getting in all you want to see and do. The smaller towns, even when they are heavily touristed, are just easier and calmer and relaxing....lots of what you want out of a vacation.

You can make reservations to visit a local winery through them, or you could do tastings there. They have one of those set ups where you buy a card and can do tastings on your own ( not as much fun as a hosted tasting, IMO) anyway, it does look like a good place to start so you can set something up ahead of time.

Be aware that the Italian driving laws with regard to blood alcohol levels are more strict than those wherever you're from, and the possible penalties are worse.

Thanks uh_oh...we haven't been to Orvieto at all. This is our first trip to Rome and my husband's first to Italy. Will check out the website...a winery visit isn't a must, be we may decide to do so if it works out for us.
Jean, thanks for the advice. We will not be driving but a great reminder for all. I don't want to end up in jail anywhere but certainly not on vacation!
