Orvieto - Termini Train - Advance Purchase Necessary??

Sorry for the standard question - but my searches didn't turn up the answer.

Dropping off the rental car in Orvieto on Wed Apr 20. Will want to take the train into Termini right away. I would prefer not to purchase ahead - just so we can have flexability. But - if there is a risk some of these trains sell out - then I will purchase ahead. Please comment.

Thanks

I do not believe it is necessary to purchase a ticket ahead of time.

rholt,

we did the journey the other way on a day trip from rome, last february, [2010] so I don't think that my experiences are so out-of date; there are 2 trains an hour as the extract from the timetable [below] illustrates:

I'd doubt very much if the cheaper regional train will be full up, or even the faster more expensive one. I'd be pretty confident about turning up and just buying a ticket.

It is rare for any train (except night trains) to sell out. And regional trains never do because you can stand if you have to.

The only reason to purchase in advance on this route is to try and snag a mini fare on an IC train or if you want to guarantee a seat. Fares are cheap so you would only save a few euro. The slower R trains are more frequent, but don't have discounts or reserved seats so there is not much point in buying R tickets in advance. Travel time is only 10-15 minutes longer than the IC trains.

Just be careful being close to Easter. We travelled on Christmas Eve on the same route on prebooked tickets. The train was PACKED!!! The passages were standing room only!
