Orvieto or Somewhere in Tuscany

We are going to be speneding 3 or 4 days in Rome and then want to head out to either Orvieto or somewhere in Tuscany (maybe Chianti region) for 3 or 4 days. For those of you who have been to both, which would you choose and are there major differences between the two areas?

Hi N,

Will you have a car?

Having a car is an option.

Hi Ira,
Having a car is an option. My biggest concern with a car is that I get car sick relatively easily so I'm concerned about winding roads.

I love Orvieto, but 3-4 days there IMO is excessive. The autostrada goes directly north from Rome into Tuscany (without curves), so if you think you can handle it, I'd rent a car, do a day trip to Orvieto, and then continue to Tuscany. Once there, you'll need to drive up on curvy roads to get to the old medieval centers of many/most towns, but it's not like spending a day doing that.

If you take trains, a lot of times the trains stop in the "lower village" area of town, which means you need to take a bus or taxi or something up to the old center anyway.

Ditto St. Cirq, except you might want to overnight in Orvieto.

One of the best restaurants in the region is I Sette Consoli
Pzza Sant’Angelo 1A

Have lunch or dinner in the garden.

Enjoy your visit.
