Orvieto, Italy

Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to stay in Orvieto? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

It is a bit out of town, but even without a car,The kind owner drove us into town and picked us up every day. The hotel-Locanda Rosati is a small sort of agro turismo-comfortable,but not lavish accommodations with lovely grounds. But the best of all are the owners who preside over the tasty evening meal communal table with guests from just about everywhere.I highly recommend this place . It offered not just a room ,but an experience that will not be forgotten,

Hotel Valentino, about a 5 minute walk from the cathedral. They offer parking garages for a fee.

Have you looked at vrbo.com for an apartment? If you will be there 3 days or more you might find it a better bargain with more room. Also check slowtrav.com for apt. and hotel recs.

k, Several Fodorites, including myself have stayed at Palazzo Piccolomini**** and really liked it. My visit was back in 2000, but most others have been much more recent.

We spent three nights at Hotel Corso two years ago and were very pleased with it.

The location was good, and Orvieto is wonderful.

Don't miss having a glass of wine at the outdoor cafe across from the Duomo and watching the setting sun reflect the gold on the magnificent facade!

i haven't stayed there, but we had a lovely few hours in orvieto on a day trip from Rome last week.

a restaurant i can heartily recommend is where we ate lunch - L'Oste de Re in the main street oppposte the Bell tower [great views from the top, BTW]. the papadelle con cinghiale [wild boar] was terrific - it was one of those dishes that you're really pleased everyone at the table ordered because you don't want to share even one mouthful with anyone else. great friendly service too.

the gelateria next door was very good too, and we couldn't get enough of the front of the cathedral! unfortunately the cafe Byrd has mentioned was being renovated but I hope it'll be up and running again by the time you go.

PS - don't bother with the underground orvieto tour - what a waste of an hour and €5!

I stayed at the B&B Sant' Andrea for 5 nights in 2008, and found it comfortable, and the manager (Aramo) congenial and helpful.

Be sure to walk a lot, especially into the medieval part, to the east of the city. If you have time, do the walk around the periphery of the city so you can look down into the valley, and up to the city perched on its setting of tufo.
