Orvieto - dealbreaker? Hourly bell chimes even in the night?
Hi, when I was in Orvieto a few years ago in October, the bell tower did hourly chimes - even during the night- and it kept us awake, night after night - it chimed every hour on the hour, including 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am... you get the picture. But it seems that others post and don't mention this- are there other times of the year when this does not happen? Do others simply stay in better hotels with better soundproofing? I'm trying to understand this as I liked Orvieto and would love to return if there will not be a repeat of the sleepless nights situation. Thanks so much!

Beatlemania,
I also stayed at Palazzo Piccolomini and didnt hear bells. My visit was back in 2000 though. Believe me, I would have left too if kept awake all night. Im a very light sleeper and left Gubbio due to bells. Unbelieveably theirs rang on the quarter hour all night long. Argh!
Like your name by the way!

We spent a night in Orvieto last September, staying at the B&B Michelangeli (my in-laws were at the B&B Ripa Medici), both relatively centrally located and didn't hear any bells / slept completely undisturbed.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like it's a soundproofing issue... or maybe the Orvieto bell was having technical difficulties when we were there Dayle, thanks for the warning about Gubbio!! Why they think it's useful to ring the bells every quarter hour is beyond me. What does it accomplish? Do these people not have watches?

I have no idea! Tradition is fine, but no one needs tradition all night long. 7am to 10 pm should suffice.
I will say that my trip was in May. After moving out of a lovely room, with a hideously screeching humidity fan that no one could fix, I was given a smaller lower level room. Unfortunately it was very hot amd humid, and the staff didnt know how to turn on the A/C. Had to try and sleep with the windows open. Not possible due to the bells. When I checked out early, I made sure they knew why. This was supposed to be a 4 star hotel, Palazzo Ducale. Beware.
