Orly vicinity?
I have an overnight at Orly airport. Is there anything interesting in the area? Thanks.
No, there isn't. It is an industrial suburb. However it is very easy to get into Paris and back to see a couple of things.
Kerouac: how easy?
You can take the Orlybus from the airport to Paris and back every 15 minutes or so. Or (more expensive) you can take the Orlyval automatic shuttle to the RER station for the line that goes through the heart of Paris. That runs about every 6 minutes.
Thank you, kerouac.

If you are only there at night, you couldn't go much of anywhere anyway, everything would be closed (except restaurants, but I don't think you mean that).
The most interesting thing I can think of is the Val de Marne Contemporary Art Museum in Vitry-sur-Seine, but it closes at 6 pm (7 on Saturdays). It's not that close to the RER stop on line C, anyway, might as well go into Paris chih is only a few more stops. |
Just rechecked flights: arrive ORY 11:35AM. Depart 1:40 PM next day! Of course I'll go into the city! Now, since I haven't been in Paris for a few years, where to stay? Anyone have a favorite? Thanks.

It's impossible to make suggestions without knowing your budget. The closer you get to the center of the city, the more expensive the hotels are.
For one night? Lets say keep it under 200E.
No problem. If I didn't already live in Paris, I wouldn't even accept to pay more than 80€, especially for just one night.
RER C also goes from Orly to points in Paris like Notre-Dame, Eiffel Tower, Orsay Museum, etc. and is cheaper than the expensive Orly-Val + RER but you have to take a shuttle bus to the Crly Airport RER C station on the periphery of the airport. I believe RER C the other way or at least one branch goes also to Versailles.
The main problem with the RER C from the "Pont de Rungis" station is that the trains stop in every station and (seem to) take forever to get to Paris.
Yes indeedy - cheapest is not always the best but if a penny-pincher... I would take the Orly-Val to RER B into town over the RER C and over the bus.

Ker is right, but you'll find these hotel rates in outer arrondissments and can have surprises.
I've slept in numerous htels at or about 80 /night. Mostly 2 stars. Now I've upped my budget to 100-110 and sleep mostly in 3 stars. You still have to pay attention for this budget, some htels are crappy. for 200 , you have plenty of choice, look at booking.com or htels.com and you'll find a lot... pay attention to reviews, I usually cross with TA. The rule is to book well in advance... even with cancellation (usually increases price by 10 or so). |
