Orleans France - Opinons and Advice on this City? Or Some Other City That Might Fit The Bill?

Hello (again),

Sorry, I keep posting these questions about this and that city...we are weaving all over the place - please be patient with our indecisivness.

This particular hour, we are now considering Orleans (for either a day trip or an overnight...).

I would love a city wrought with a narrow, twisting, cobblestone, pedestrianized "old town"...one with lots of walking opportunities. I would also like to expose my partner to some kind of fortress or chateau.

I've been to Amboise and Bloise previously.

Note: We are travelling by public transportation.

Thanks for any (more) advice!

Orléans, while a fine largish town with a nice setting on the Loire, an interesting cathedral, is not a major destination in itself

You won't find much of what you are looking for there, in particular because Orleans, like several other Loire towns was heavily bombed in WWII. Many parts of the city are therefore post-war reconstructions.

You might be interested in looking into the smaller western Loire towns (Loches, Saumur, Chinon, Angers), but none of those places will provide "lots of walking opportunities" and totally fulfill your "cobblestoned streets" fantasy...

I went to Orleans one year and found it disappointing. On a later visit to the area, considering that I might have misjudged it, I visited again: I was disappointed again.

I don't know what you mean by walking opportunities. Other than that, you might be describing Chinon.

I'll suggest Tours.
It is well served by train lines.
Organized bus tours are offered to area chateaux. Plus, Tours itself is charming, with a well-preserved center, a beautiful cathedral (the color of the stained glass rivals that in Chartres) and nearby museum, and great antique shops.

I just saw that there's another thread going on Tours, mentioning both positive and negative opinions.

Thanks for your suggestions. It sounds like Orleans wont be the best stop on our short stay in France. Back to the drawing board!

We appreciate all of your feedback and help!
