Organs in Paris
 

Does anyone know the schedules for when the organs are played at Notre Dame or the St Severin church. I'm going to be there July 20th - 22nd (tues - thurs) and August 1st (Sunday). Thanks!

<BR>Can't help with those, but an alternative might be St. Suplice(sp?). We enjoyed a short (1/2hr) concert after the 10:30 mass several weeks ago. It is every Sunday. Pretty church, and a booming pipe organ. Easy to get to from the Metro too.

I stopped at St. Severin on a week day when I was in Paris last July, and a group called the Michigan Ambassadors of Music was performing - - English hymns and American gospel. They were quite good. Does anyone know where you can find schedules for this sort of thing?

Don't know if you meant online schedules for pre-trip planning, (can't help you with that one,) but once you're in town pick up a copy of Pariscope for 3F (comes out every Weds.,) it has that kind of listing (incl. concert sched for Ste-Chapelle, which so many here have raved about.)

Jason, <BR> When you're there, look for a newspaper shop, and ask for "pariscope" : it cost 2-3 ff, and you should find in there a list of all the concerts in Paris that week. Isn't the pariscope in French? I hate to admit it but I don't speak French. Unfortunately I have a feeling I'm going to miss a lot of things because of that. Would the Tourist office have any info about this? I will probably check with them once I get to Paris. Thanks for the help!

Pariscope has a small section in English. But, you don't have to speak French just to work your way through the concert listings. In the table of contents Pariscope has "Musique," with subheadings like "concerts classiques; operas; jazz-rock," and so on. You hardly even need a French-English dictionary to figure that out. The two things which may be strange are the numbers like (8e) which refer to the arrondissement (section) of Paris; and the 24 hour clock, where 8:00 pm is written 20h, 9:00 pm is 21h, and so on. If you're specifically looking for organ concerts, the French word for organ is orgue. I notice Pariscope also has a website, www.pariscope.fr

There are often also small posters attached to walls and poles that announce concert series in churches and elsewhere. Depending on your hotel there may also be small flyers at the front desk. We attended concerts at St. Severin and the church on Ile St. Louis whose name escapes me. Sometimes tickets are available at the church ahead of time, but mostly you buy them just before the concert. <BR>
