Orangerie- is it finally open?

It sems time to post the annual question. Is the orangerie open yet, and if not, any ideas about when? My theory (not serious) is that they ruined the monet murals and are afraid to re-open and let everyone know.

There is now speculation that the re-opening might be in 2006 or beyond.

My only source on this is what I read here on this forum. Try searching "orangerie".

Best wishes,

Rex

The official word on the closing is that excavations in the foundations uncovered archaeological material (a wall constructed in the 16th century) that must be dealt with carefully and completely before the museum re-opens.

Meanwhile, after June 17 you will again be able to visit reception room at the Musee Gustav Moreau, which has been closed since 1903.

How disappointing that it will be quite awhile before the orangerie is opened. I was in Paris in 2001 and at that time it was closed and I was hoping when I go there in May it would have reopened. Oh well, I guess it will give me yet another excuse to go back to Paris

What I don't understand is, what with all these interminable, if understandable, delays, why they don't move the permanent collection there to some other venue until they get through dealing with the new archaeological findings. Surely they are losing valuable revenue, because the Orangerie was always a favorite with Impressionist fans (especially fans of Les Nymphéas), of which there are many. Maybe epi's theory isn't totally off base? I doubt it, but who knows? It's been YEARS now!

I was REALLY hoping to go there this Christmas. I've missed it for the past 3 trips. Arrrrgggghh!!! :(

When we were there in December 1998 they were starting to shut down -- you could still see the Nympheas [for a peek: http://travelswithus.net/DEC98/paris2.htm, but that was about it:(

Does anyone know yet if it is open?

mamc Jan 18th, 2005 09:13 AM

It is not - note above, it may be 2006 and beyond when it opens again.

StCirq Jan 18th, 2005 09:13 AM

No, it's not open. And the most recent info I can find is that it MAY reopen in 2006.
