Oradour-Sur-Glane: Day-trip from Paris
It can be done--but with caveats that may very well exclude most travelers. One will have to spend what may be considered significant euros on transportation. One will have to endure six hours total on a train. One will have to be willing commit an entire day to this adventure. Should anyone harbor even the slightest hesitation given those parameters, your position is noted, understood and there is no reason for you to read any further.
But…you may be interested in my follow-up post on a recent day-trip to Oradour-Sur-Glane from Paris: If you share a deep passion to learn from the lessons of history; If you are compelled to comprehend the cause and effect of historical events; And you have been forever haunted by the words of Sir Laurence Olivier in the opening segment of the series World at War: “Down this road, the soldiers came…” |
I agree....this is a place not to be missed. It is very emotional, but you are walking through a terrible result of Nazi occupation and history is experienced first hand. May we never forget. We found the experience one of the highlights of our trip to France.

I have just started watching "The World at War" courtesy of a DVD set from my local library. Given the age of the series (mid-1970s), I was wondering if Oradour-sur-Glane was still maintained the way it is presented in those haunting opening scenes. Thanks for the confirmation.
