Opinions on Ulm Germany
Anyone got any as I'm looking for a city to spend the night in between Munich and Heidelberg.

I give thumbs up to Ulm - - especially on a Tuesday night (fruit and vegetabele market in the main town square in front of the Munster every Wednesday morning).

I also recommend Ulmer Spatz as an excellent place to stay and eat.

Best wishes,

Rex
Zed, I've stayed in Ulm a few times some time ago while on business and I like the town (small city, actually). There is Ulm and (New) Neu Ulm which are sister cities, more or less, with Ulm, obviously as the oldest of the two.

I went to a summer fest there and it was one of best I have ever seen. Great time, food, beer...

Ulm is home to the tallest church spire in Europe (or so advertised) and is the birthplace of Albert Einstein. It's a very nice area located on the Donau River and a good spot for a night's stay. Easy to get around in and right on an autobahn route.

Have a good trip.

Ulm was the burial place of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (The Desert Fox). I found it to be the hardest city to navigate around in all Germany. We were trying to get to the cathedral and kept aiming for the spire, but we kept hitting one way streets headed in the wrong direction. At one point I ended-up driving down the middle of the pedestrians-only zone. I was almost hoping the Polizei would stop me so I could get directions.

Ulm is a beautiful city, and worth a stop, esp. if you enjoy visiting churches. Be advised, however, that most travelers in Germany will do almost anything to avoid having to go through Stuttgart (do you enjoy traffic jams?). You might want to think about the north route with a stop at Dinkelsbuhl or even Rothenburg (easy drive to Heidelberg from there). Just a thought...

Not far from Ulm is the Abbey of Ottobeuren, one of the largest and most beautiful church buildings anywhere. It is a monument to roccoco art.

Ulm is a very nice place to spend a day or two. The Munster offers an incredible view if you can climb to the top. It also has the crooked house - over 500 years old, with people still living in it. It is a lovely city to walk around in.
