went to Stonehenge with a friend on a bus tour a few years ago, then when we were back last May with our hubbies we rented a car and took them, as well as Aviemore - enjoyed both, and glad we went to both...am planning to go to Newgrange in April when we visit Dublin, read about it in a guidebook...thanks for your endorsement...

I think lostagin picked a terrific screen name :-)

She obviously meant Avebury (Aviemore is six hundred of miles away in northern Scotland)

Stonehenge is of course an icon of England. I have probably been there 20 times (before and after the fences) and it is amazing - but I do prefer Avebury. It is a part of the landscape, not set apart from it. Avebury is more "real" because of the juxtaposition of the stones and earthworks to the village that grew up around it. Stonehenge is more like a priceless artefact in a museum - don't touch. Avebury is hands-on.

But if you go to one you should go to both.

Stonehenge was actually more impressive than I thought it would be. You can't get too close unless you do an inner circle tour, but I thought the view was fine. I actually did Stonehenge as part of a day tour that included Avebury, Salibury, and Old Sarum Castle. It was with Stonehenge Tours. I really enjoyed it.
