Opinions on Sofitel in Athens?

I will be spending a few days in Crete in May and plan to fly to Athens from Crete the night before my international flight out of Athens. I like the idea of the Sofitel so that I don't have to worry about transportation to and from the airport, but it does seem a bit pricey. Has anyone had any experience with the Sofitel? Thanks!

I have never stayed here, but I think this a new hotel built right by the new airport and therefore they have the corner on rooms. I am not sure just where the new airport is or how far out from Athens it is. We always stayed in Glafada at the SeaView, but we flew out of the old airport. Find out how far the airport is from Glafada, which is a suburb of Athens. There are a lot of hotels in this area. Maybe someone on this site can help. Good luck.

Is the Sofitel close to the new airport or the old. I thought that the Armonia in Glyfada was the closest to the new one.

From what I've read, the Sofitel is literally *in* the new airport, and that downtown Athens is an hour to an hour and a half away (depending on traffic and construction). Thanks for the Glafada suggestion; I'll find out how far it is from the new airport and whether it's a feasible option for me. Thanks!

The Sofitel is as convenient as it gets. It is literally as the airport, across the road from the terminal building. One minute walk max. to departures from hotel.
hotels at Glyfada are a fair distance away.
Vouliagmeni is slightly closer than Glyfada but the hotels there are also pretty expensive.

I've stayed at the Fenix in Glyfada and it is a moderately priced hotel - better than decent rooms and a nice
breakfast as I remember. The new airport is WAY out in no-wheresville, and depending on the traffic can take from 45 minutes to 90 minutes or so. At 4AM in the morning it takes 45!!

It seems that the Sofitel definitely has the market for airport-convenient hotels! My flight leaves at 6am and I am unwilling to risk long travel time, traffic, etc. getting there first thing in the morning. Better to wake up and walk out the door to my gate, so the Sofitel will get my $200.....
