i'm thinking of stopping by caserta onroute on my drive to naples...any opinion/comments on the palace visit? how grand does it really look if you compare it to versailles?

thanks in advance,

It is definitely worth a look. Budget 3 hours for the Palace and Gardens. The Grand Staircase puts Versailles to shame. The gardens in back extend for 3 kilometers. General Eisenhower liked it very much.

thanks! i just saw an aerial footage of the palace on tv and it looks huge! i wondered why it doesn't get the coverage here or on guide books...maybe perhaps the exterior looks great but nothing much inside...

I really didn't think the palace was anything special from the outside. But inside it is wonderful. As GAC said, the staircase is amazing as are the gardens, and many of the rooms have been restored.

Apparently, it was Eisenhower's headquarters in southern Italy during WWII and the palace was used in the last Start Wars episode.

It certainly is the highlight of Caserta.

and the Palace liked very much also to Bill Clinton as here, in 1994 there was the gala dinner when Naples had G7.
When you are here, don't miss to taste mozzarella di bufala !
and, if you like pure silk, the handmade products of San Leucio.
Feel free e-mail me if you need more helps: I know Caserta very well as often I come nearby to buy mozzarella.
Have a nice trip.

Hi Mike,

I am with the others - I thought Caserta was great.

Compared to Versailles the first difference is the crowd, much less in Caserta. Caserta is a bit more casual as well.

Overall the grounds are better, the entrance is grand and the rooms toured are equal - or perhaps a notch better.

I wouldn't miss it.

Mike:

Regarding parking there is a new and large underground parking garage a block from the front of the palace - plenty of parking. Ditto on the above - don't miss it. My brother, who lives between Naples and Caserta and has visited both Caserta and Versailles, rates Caserta higher. It is certainly one of the most underrated tourist attractions in all of Italy.

Buon Viaggio!

Dan

Mike,
not only did my friend and I enjoy it,
but my children (10 and 13) were not bored for a minute!

Don't buy a "guide" book when you park,
there are plenty on sale inside,
and they are probably a little cheapre.
though you can always bargin with the gentlemen.
Enjoy,
and watch out for the giant swans in one of the "lakes",
they like to nibble

You did not say where you are coming from, on way to Naples.
but, have you thought of the Abbezia at Montecassino?
That is also very much near naples.
and a spectacular drive up and the abbey is lovely.
