Opera in Verona
I see that there will be an opera performed in Verona at the end of June. Can anyone tell me about the Arena di Verona. Is it a great place to see an opera. Yes, I do like opera and to see one in Verona should be a treat.
Thanks to all who reply. |
If you're talking about June of this year and you haven't made reservations already then you're probably out of luck.

We saw Aida at the Arena di Verona this past July. It was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. The production is on a scale that is beyond all reason: literally hundreds of performers, huge sets, a giant orchestra, and a great sound system. It's amazing. The arena is just that - an ancient Roman open arena. There is reserved seating on chairs on the floor of the arena and then there is general admission on the original stone "bleachers." I disagree that it's too late to buy tickets now. The reserved seating is available online, and the general admission seating is available up to do the date of performance (seating capacity is 15,000.) The tickets range from about 10 Euro up to 142 Euro. You can buy a libretto cheaply at virtually any nearby tabacchi. One note, although they serve wine and champagne inside the arena, you are not allowed to bring any bottles inside - and they check.

This is on my list of things to do before I die. Please post a trip report!

Oh, I so hope you can get tickets. We were there in August, during the peak of opera season, having only one night in Verona. That would be Monday, the only night with no performance. Please let me live vicariously through your trip report!

We were at the opera last July and it truly is an amazing place to see any event they have there. We bought tickets the day of the opera at our hotel in Lake Garda, about 50 euros with bus pickup at our hotel for general admission way up in the top.

We saw Aida last July. It was my first opera, so I can't compare to seeing opera elsewhere. It was a great experience. The acoustics were amazing. The set was unbelievable. We got tickets through the web site. We stayed at a hotel nearby and walking to and from the opera was so much fun.
(One drawback was that it was slightly misty and the people in front of us wore cheap plastic raincoats that rustled every time they moved ever-so-slightly.) |
My husband and I were in Verona late August 2005, and we saw Aida at Arena di Verona. Verona’s repertories are one of those “Grand” operas, heavy on visuals and lots of spectacles to impress operagoers.
If you are going to see opera in Verona as one of the fun tourist things to do, you’ll have good time. Seeing full production in outdoor arena is very refreshing experience. But if you are serious opera lover, you may feel dissatisfied. After all, Arena was not built for opera theater, so the acoustics are not that great. We thought that performance quality was just okay. The arena is too big to deliver quality performance. |
Hi,
We went to the opera in Verona. It was enchanting. I was unaware that the opera season had started in Verona until we arrived. I never thought we could get tickets, so we didn’t try, but as we were walking around the arena we saw that there were still seats available. The overture had just started, so we got a reduced price. Everyone had a lit candle for the overture and the arena was magical. The sets are very grand and the ambiance is tops. Enjoy |
dhoffman, all my friends that live east of Verona try to go to the opera in Verona whenever they can. Their stories are beautiful. And the lightening of the candles always seemed to me that that must be so magical. Even teenagers are caught up in the beauty of it. Have a wonderful time and do let us know how you enjoyed it.

We were able to get tickets for Aida for the Roman Arena in Verona. We saw it on June 29th and we bought the tickets 4 days before hand. Of course, we sat on the stone steps but it made it more realistic. It was fantastic.
