Opera / ballet lovers - please help me decide
 

I will be in Paris in July and would like to see an opera or a ballet.
I am not familiar with the operas/ballets listed . I have attended other performances at Bastille and Garnier in the past.

I don't understand your listings very well. But I don't like opera much at all, but love ballet. However, the idea of La Petite Danseuse does not thrill me. However, that Jiri Kylian work has not gotten very good reviews, either, if my memory is right. However, I'd check reviews and if they were okay, I'd go to that as it sounds a little different. If you like opera, obviously you'll have different choices.

No, Florez and DiDonato are not singing. It is Camerena and Karine Deshayes.

Okay, I've calmed down and looked at the list and cast again.

First, the 2 operas:

As Christina said, Florez & DiDonato are in the june cast. But I think La Donna del Lago should still be fun to see, and the cast is till pretty good, AND it's a new production. Plus, the supporting roles are sung by Colin Lee and Daniela Barcellona - both are very good.

La Petite Renarde rusée is The Cunning Little Vixen by Janáček. I've never seen it, but having seen another opera by Janáček before, I won't be running to see this. I don't know how the supertitles work in Bastile, but bear in mind this opera is sung in Czech.

AS for ballets, many people here know them much better than I do. Kaguyahime is by Jiri Kilian, so it will be very modern. I am still a newbie to ballet, and I personally prefer the classical ballets and I know I won't appreciate contemporary ballet.

I don't know anything about La Petite Danseuse de Degas, so I can't comment.

It seems inspired by Japanese music

La Donna del Lago is more interesting to me than the other opera .
Both performances are on the same night...decisions, decisions.

Another thing to consider is that La donna del Lago is at the Garnier; vs Kaguyahime at Bastille. If you don't have any preference, perhaps you can see which type of tickets (price/location) are still available. Since sightlines at Garnier is terrible from many seats, I wouldn't go there for an opera and not be able to see much. OTOH, Bastille is enormous so if the only tickets left are way in the back or up in the top levels, you may not be able to see much from so far away.

P.S. I haven't seen La Donna del Lago before, but I like Rossini's operas so I would pick that over the Janacek.

Both of these are new productions, so it's hard to say which one is "better" without any previous performance reviews.

I don't know much about Lluis Pasqual, the Catalan director for La Donna del Lago. It doesn't sound like he's too radical/minimalist, so perhaps that's a "good" thing.

I have seen a ballet in both venues but not an opera.

Yes, some opera productions can be strange ;I don't care much for "modernized" productions of operas or Shakespeare

danon, did you get your tickets? I wonder what your final decision was. If not yet, you may want to read this "final dress rehearsal" of La Donna del Lago from blogger OperaCake. It sounds like the sets/costumes are traditional, but quite boring from directorial point of view.
