Is it true that you cannot wear open toed shoes in the churches in Italy?

A friend of my daughter (age 22) just returned from Italy and told her that. Well, glad I do not have to trade my Birkenstocks in for a pair of black patent leather shoes, lol.

Sandi - you can wear the black patents if you aren't wearing a dress. It's that combination that's a no no!
