oosterpark, Amsterdam???
 

Hi,

does anyone know where oosterpark is in amsterdam? it says near center, but i would like to find a bit more detail. how far away to all the tourist sites, like ann frank museum, the canal, the red light district, etc... and how far away from Harlem? what train or bus can be taken? it says it is central tram-zone, but how long is the trian ride? is oosterpark safe?

for me to pick a area to stay, which area is more recommended? Harlem or Oosterpark?

That area is pretty far out, way the other side of the city from Anne Frank house. I walked from Leidseplein to Tropenmuseum one rainy day (which is near Ooster Park) it took about 1 hour. The area at a glance appears a working class and residential neighborhood. Not bad but not as scenic as closer in the canal rings. Certainly if you are traveling by tram you can get around, but it would not be easy walking distance for the things you mention.

Haarlem is a 20 min. train ride from Central Station or bus #80 from Marnixstr. near Leidseplein (says my Let's Go Amsterdam 2002).

My own recommendation would be to stay more centrally. I particularly liked it around Vondelpark and Leidseplein.

oosterpark is in the eastern portion of the city. for a tourist, it would be a bit "out there" unless you were interested in football (soccor) specifically.

haarlem is another dutch city some forty minutes away from amsterdam by train.

can you recommended any budget hotel that is centrally located, near all the tourist site that i mentioned, trying to stay under 100 euro per night.

Nice breakfast included, get a room with a private (not shared) toilet, good location, in your price range.

But there's loads of other similar choices. Read some of the other Amsterdam hotel threads here focusing on the Jordaan, Vondelpark, Leidseplein, central canal ring districts.

Hi, lin. Just stayed at Hotel Kap, per suze's response to my earlier request for help. I really enjoyed my stay there. It's quaint (read: steep stairs and no elevator) but that's what I look for when I travel. Easy access to the tram system. Nice and quiet but seemed close to everything. DD and I walked to Dam Square, all the museums we wanted,train station,etc. with no problems. Have a great time wherever you stay!

Nimrod, Truly, thanks for the link to a map. I was thinking after I replied yesterday that LIN really needed to have one to get a feel for the various parts of the city and where the museums and sights are located.

Sallyjane, Really glad the hotel worked out for you. As I'm sure I mentioned the breakfast room and breakfast was my favorite. I think another trip I might try something enw but feel confident to recommend Hotel Kap as a servicable option for the price range and in a good location.
