Only have 1 day in Naples - What to do?

My son (age 26) and Mother-in-law (age 84) will be in Naples for one day. I have recommended the Museum and Pompeii and that will fill the day, but can you recommend a place to have great pizza, a great place to shop, or anything they could do in the evening. They are staying at the Excelsior. Thanks.

Hi WT,

On the street where they are staying are about 4 restaurants/cafes.

On Via Sauro, and across the marina are another 3 or four.

May I be so bold as to suggest scrapping a visit to Pompeii and spending the whole day in Naples?

If so, I can give you an itinerary.

Sounds great ira! My son may not even be interested in Pompeii. I would love to have the itinerary. WT

Hi WT,

Arrive Naples (by train?) and cab to the hotel.

Walk across the bridge to the Castel del Ovo. Check out the restaurants along the way.

Look at the view across Naples Bay to Vesuvius.

Return to hotel and walk along the water on Via N Sauro to the Public Gardens and the Pzza Plebiscito. (1 km).

Cab or walk up Via Toledo to the Archaeological Museum.

Walk down Via Toledo to Pzza Dante. Go left through the Porta Alba to Via San Severo. Go right to the Capelle Sansevero and it's marbles, especially the Veiled Christ.

Depending on the time,

a. See Spacanapoli
Go east on Via dei Tribunali to the Duomo, turn right on Via Duomo to Via Bagio dei Librai, turn right again and walk to the Pzza Gesu Nuovo.

There is a very good restaurant, Pizza Bellini in Pzza V. Bellini, about 2 blocks north.

From here, go south to Pzza Carita. You can now walk downhill all the way to the hotel (shops are open until about 21:00) or take a cab.

b. Go south to the Pzza San Domenico. Go right to Pzza Gesu Nuovo. Continue as above.

I hope they enjoy Napoli as much as I did.

With apologies to Ira, please don't skip Pompeii! I thought it was a great experience.

Another vote for Pompeii, unless you're the sort who doesn't like to rush. I'd cut short the visit to Pompeii if it's not of much interest, but I'd at least make an effort to visit.

Help your Mother-in-law and son make the decision with regard to Pompeii with this in mind: it offers special challenges to senior visitors. The first is the heat. Even on a day that is not too bad temperature-wise, Pompeii can be beastly because there is literally NO shade along those dusty ancient streets. Secondly, it is very uneven underfoot and this can be hazardous even for youngsters. I led a group of teens there last fall and they found it very tiring. The grounds are expansive and once committed its hard to make a hasty retreat.

I am with Ira, Naples has lots to see without leaving town and that is within walking distance of a rest stop for tired, older legs ( I lead seniors tours, too, so I am watchful for this in trip planning!)

Using ira's route, as you go thru Port d'Alba on the right is one of the best pizza spots in Napoli. You can sit inside or outside under the gateway.

to grasshopper and 111op - I agree that Pompeii is a don't miss, but IMO Napoli offers an enjoyable look into the real world of Italy, while having many don't miss tourist sites and things to enjoy.
