Only 1 bag on British Airways?? Please help?

US citizen flying round-trip between London and Marseille in a couple of weeks on British Airways, and I was just investigating the baggage allowances -- I can only check 1 bag!? I want to do a fair amount of shopping in the south of France, but how the heck will I be able to get stuff to London and then eventually to the US? Ordinarily, I would pack 1 bag, and have an empty one for purchases - but they tell me it's $4 per pound for a 2nd extra bag - that would be a fortune! Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I *so* want to bring wine and other items back to the US with me.

BA have changed their allowances, but I THINK the one bag rule is for domestic, not for European destinations. Check the above: It states you are allowed a total of 23 Kilos and I assume they are still allowing two bags.

I checked in this morning at Madrid, destination LHR and had two bags, but I was fying Business Class, so can't confirm rules for economy.

I am pretty sure you may be OK, just be careful to keep the weight down and remember you are only allowed (at this point, to bring on one small bag or a purse, not both.

If you are on a flight that will connect with a flight to the US you should be allowed to take 2 bags as US law requires the airlines to let you have 2 checked bags. Otherwise, they will probably make you pay for the additional bag.

Just flew British Airways from Seattle to Zürich via Heathrow. You are allowed TWO suitcases. I don't know the weight limit though. We flew in the economy section.

By the way, the flight food was delicious.

DCJones: "US law requires . . . " And just where did you find this"law"?

ejb5: It seems you are flying from Marseilles to London - and then at some later date flying on to the US - correct?

If so, on the France/UK flight you are allowed 2 pieces of up to 23 kg each. For your flight to the States you are allowed 2 pieces of up to 32 kg each.

I got the "law" from the BA website when they first told of their changes in the baggage allowance for October. It's not there now. It may be a "regulation" rather than a "law".

Why not ask BA directly?

Flights between the US and Europe used to allow 2 bags at 32 kg (about 70 pounds), but that was changed this summer to the 23kg (50 pound) weight limit. I managed to have a few bags at 70 pounds because of my FF status (and I think you can do 70 pounds if in business class), but my kids could only have 50 pound bags.

A real bummer for those of us living overseas who are used to bringing back a bunch of bags/boxes at 70 pounds each!

Yes, you have it absolutely correct. Can you please tell me where you see that I am allowed 2 pieces of luggage up to 23 kg each? I don't see it documented anywhere, and this would make a world of difference!

Use Postal services. Most European POs sell special cartons that are quite sturdy. Surface mail may take two months. Use search to get country details.

Since you are flying to Marseille-London in August/September, you will be allowed a MAXIMUM of 23 kgs checked baggage free. Anything above this will be charged. They will not accept any piece of baggage above 32 kg. It looks like only 1 piece is allowed though this is not explicitly stated.

On the UK-US, you will be allowed 2 pieces of checked luggage, max of 32 kgs each.

If you are doing a thru flight, Marseille-US with only a CONNECTION in London, the higher allowance applies. However, if these are 2 separate trips (MRS-LON, LON-US, with STOPOVER in London), then the lower allowances (1 piece 23kg bag) applies for your France-UK trip.

Note: if you are flying back to the USA AFTER Oct 11, you will only be allowed 1 piece of free checked luggage up to 23 kgs if traveling in WT. If traveling in higher classes (WT+, BC, FC), you are allowed 2 pieces.
Anything over 23kgs will incur a charge. No piece of luggage over 32 kgs will be accepted.

You can look into shipping the wine back to the USA if your state allows this. Also just pack light for your France trip. 23 kgs (44lbs) is still a lot of weight!

The BA website O'Reilly linked isn't totally clear - but in the second box -- "All other international routes" -- the weights are just to show the differences from what is allowed on "USA, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Brazil, Nigeria, Caribbean and Central America routes "

The number of bags is the same - i.e. two

The change to only one free checked bad doesn't start until Oct 11.

nibblette,
I interpreted the post-Oct 11 policy as still allowing 2 bags to/from US in WT with a max weight of 23 kg for each bag.

"*World Traveller passengers travelling to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations."

ejb5,
The single piece allowance for LHR-MRS doesn't go into effect until Oct 11. Until then, you're allowed a total weight of 23 kg with no specified limit on number of pieces.

Patty,
The BA site explicitly states that after Oct 11th, WT will only be allowed 1 piece of 23kg max checked luggage free. Before Oct 11th, 2 pieces are allowed.
All higher classes (WT+, BC, FC) will continue to have 2 pieces max 23 kg free.

The following is directly from the BA site.
A single allowance system based on the number of bags that can be checked in will be introduced from 11 October 2006.

FIRST, Club World, Club Europe and World Traveller Plus
Passengers will be able to check two bags into the aircraft hold free of charge.

World Traveller*, Euro Traveller, BA Connect & UK Domestic
Passengers will be able to check one bag into the aircraft hold free of charge.
