they are completly different one from another. gîte de France is more official and works with "la préfecture" of each departement in france. The accommodations have been checked and rated with "épis" (corn ears?)like stars for hotels according to their comfort and equipment they provide. Vrbo just takes money to add on their listing anybody who wants to rent out an accommodation .(148$ a year). an owner of a rated gite can advertise on vrbo but not everybody can register in the gîte de france association. (hope that is clear ;-))

There are over 40,000 gites available from the Gites de France program. I don't think vrbo has that many. We've rented 21 different Gites for 31 stays of anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks each stay.
Most "prefectures"/departments (as coco noted) use one of two different software services to reserve on-line. ITEA, which comes in a few different flavors, and RESENFRANCE which basically does not work. I think many departments are switching from RESINFRANCE to ITEA (dah). Some departments do not have on-line reservation capabilities at all. You can purchase a book for each department, that lists all the gites available.
Depending on the specific Gite, you rent directly from the proprietor, or you rent through the Gites de France office for that department. There are over 90 departments in France. Each department has slightly different policies and practices. Quite often, you can pay for the Gite with a credit card if you rent through the gites de France office.

Can't recommend welcomecottages.com highly enough. Used them for 4 different gites (as well as 2 cottages in the UK) and every one of them has been of the highest quality and very clean.
The prices are also very competitive. The prices are in ££ and you should click to remove the cost of the channel ferry crossing that's included in the quote. One tip if you book on-line. The more photographs included then I find the better the quality of the property.

AR I wonder how much they charge to owners. one has to contact them to know.
I'm not sure the owners can put a link to their website because renters deal with the "agency" (is there a commission?)so the least they can do is add a lot of pictures if they can.
I don't like to register and be allowed to put only one or two pictures with no link to my website (but usually the registration is free so...)

choose the department you want to go to and with google you'd be able to find meublés and gîtes.
