One week on the Amalfi Coast
My partner and I are looking forward to one week on the Amalfi Coast. We are interested in renting an apartment or staying at a hotel that is small or secluded and we would love a view of the coast. We are hoping for any recommendations on where to stay and what day trips to take. Thanks so much, now I release this question out to the experts.

Hi Leighdavid!
There are a ton of great options on the coast to choose from. Are you departing from Canada? If so there are some great airfare and hotel packages which include FREE tranfers to the coast as they can cost over 300cad per person!!!
Let me know and I would be happy to help

Google Onda Verde, a six or eight room hotel halfway beteen Amalfi and Positano. A good kitchen. The Sita bus stops across the road. When you approach it (on the water side of the road) you see parking for a few cars and a big box. It is the elevator enclosure. The elevator goes down to the foyer. All rooms face the view. I liked it.

Naples is the closest city, but I don't know how many flights from NYC per day. But Rome to Naples is not a long train ride. I found the Sita busses to be convenient and dependable and I'd also rather not drive the coast road.

IMO, fly NYC to Rome, train from Rome to Salerno, ferry from Salerno to Amalfi or Positano. If you are there for a week, you can rent an apartment, which will save you money and luggage (if it has a washing machine).

We too are from NYC and will be visiting the Amalfi coast in May. I was unable to find any direct flights from JFK or Newark to Naples so we are flying direct to Rome and then heading down by train. (We are trying to take it easy/break up our travel as I am pregnant, so we are spending the day/night in Rome before heading south, but you could catch a train down shortly after your flight arrives).
We are taking a high-speed train from Rome to Naples (~ 1 hour) and then taking the local train (circumvensiana) from Naples to Sorrento with a stop at Pompeii on the way. We are hoping to take the ferry from Sorrento to Positano although the bus is also an option.
I'm not that much help on where to stay as we still have 5 weeks until our trip

Leighdavid:
I think that one week is almost the ideal time in the AC,and you will really happy.
Here is the report of our week at the amalfi coast:
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...1-to-oct-3.cfm
Having done the trip(and thinking in returning in 2012),we think we should hade visited Paestum also.
Related to arriving there, you can fly to Rome, train to Naples, train Naples to Sorrento and take the SITA bus to your location in the AC.Or you can train Rome-Salerno and take the SITA bus or a ferry from Salerno to your location in the AC.
Rent a car or not? we were perfectly happy with public transportation, you can only really need a car if your choice of hotel or agriturismo is one lost in the mountains.
Difficult to comment on hotels as you ask for something secluded;may be you have to investigate a little and then ask for comments from fodorites, there are a lot of AC lovers here.
If you want to know any other thing, please ask.Have a nice trip...

Here is a sneak preview. Decide your home base first--I suggest Positano.

Some like Positano as a base, I prefer Sorrento. Easier to get to Pompeii (by local train), Capri (by boat) and Amalfi and GREAT views of the Bay of Naples and the volcano. Excellent eating, including the best gelato in Italy at Davide. LOTS of lodging options, also.
A chacun, son gout.

We stayed at Villa San Cosma in Ravello last October. It was beautiful, new, and had a spectacular view. You can google it and look it up in Trip Advisor. It is run like a B&B but is like an apartment with very small kitchens.

Small and secluded might be a tough ticket in a hotel on the coast. You might factor in the small village of Furore when you look, as there are many properties with views. Just a thought that occurred to me as I am researching my own stay there. Easy bus access to the coast; not-so-easy walk down to the sea. Much better pricing than in the coastal towns, or so it appears to me as I plow through the listings.

Secluded in Amalfi might mean this recently reopened hotel, with astounding views:

Thank you for all the information we are looking to spend about 150 per night. We are open to any food and wine recommendations. Looks like we will be there from June 25th thru July 3rd.
We are also gay and would like to know if there is any kind of community there as well.
