One week in Paris - draft itinerary
As part of a month long excursion to Europe, I am spending a week in Paris.
I arrive in Paris via Night Train from Berlin on a Friday, and leave for Belgium on the following Friday. So far, I have come up with following itinerary wise: (the letters after the attraction name indicates it's level of priority eg, L - Low, M - Medium, H - High) Day - Versailles Day - Montmartre - not on the weekend Sacre Couer (M) St. Denis Basilica (H) Day - West Paris Marmottan Monet(H) Bois de Boulogne(M) Louvre(H) Day - 1/2 day Catacombs(M) Foundation Cartier(L) Foundation Cartier-Bresson(L) Zadkine(L) Tour Montpernasse (very L) other 1/2 day Orsay (H) Eglise St. Sulpice (M) Jardin du Luxembourg (L) Musee du Luxembourg (L-H, depending) Day (Friday) arrival day St. Chappelle (H) Notre Dame (H) Conciergerie (M) Louvre - evening (H) Day Les Invalides (H) Musee Rodin (H) Orangerie (H) Day Musee Picasso (L) Musee Carnavalet (L) Jewish History Museum (M) Centre Georges Pompidou (L) La Pere Lachaise (M) I don't expect to hit all the low priority items, some of them will come down to whether they are covered by the Paris Museum Pass. Anything seem radically wrong? Thanks for any suggestion you can provide. |
HI There,
I had a wonderful week in Paris and these are my suggestions: catacombs- not worth the time . louvre- unless you have alot of time, there are long lineups especially for the more popular pieces, loved the orsay museum more( and shorter lines) jewish history museum- it's ok but would put it low on the list. suggestion: we went to rue cler where there is an outdoor market , purchased some food and wine and had a great picnic in a park not far from and a beautiful view of the eiffel tower. |
What month will be your trip?
I would change the priority of Carnavalet Museum from L to H. Like you , I did not consider it as a high priority, so only after 4 - 5 visits in Paris I visited it. We loved it, it is so rich, and interesting. Instead of some L sites, I would add a visit of Petit Palais, which is a splendid building, very decorated and inside there are a lot of pictures and statues. You can visit (but have to phone to book this tour , even it is free) the Hotel de Ville (City Hall), with its very beautiful halls and interesting history. http://www.paris.fr/portail/english/...rtlet_id=19140 Another interesting place is Dom of Invalides (where Napoleon's tomb is). |
Hi Glenn,
>(the letters after the attraction name indicates it's level of priority eg, L - Low, M - Medium, H - High) Day - Versailles With only a week in Paris, I suggest that Versailles should be a M priority and only on a day when the fountains are working. >Day - Montmartre - not on the weekend Sacre Couer (M) St. Denis Basilica (H) Add the Abesses Metro stop and the Montmartrebus from Pigalle up to Sacre Coeur Day - West Paris Marmottan Monet(H) Bois de Boulogne(M) Louvre(H) Too much for one day. I would drop the Bois Day - Skip this 1/2 day Catacombs(M) Foundation Cartier(L) Foundation Cartier-Bresson(L) Zadkine(L) Tour Montpernasse (very L) other 1/2 day Orsay (H) Eglise St. Sulpice (M) Jardin du Luxembourg (L) Musee du Luxembourg (L-H, depending) Day (Friday) arrival day St. Chappelle (H) Notre Dame (H) Conciergerie (M) Louvre - evening (H) Day Les Invalides (H) Musee Rodin (H) Orangerie (H) Day Musee Picasso (L) Musee Carnavalet (L) Jewish History Museum (M) Centre Georges Pompidou (L) La Pere Lachaise (M) I would make the Carnavalet an M. You might want to visit the Parc Monceau, have Sunday brunch at http://www.musee-jacquemart-andre.com/en/jacquemart/ and tour the museum. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
Musee Picasso (L)
Musee Carnavalet (L) Jewish History Museum (M) Centre Georges Pompidou (L) La Pere Lachaise (M) The Picasso Museum is closed until 2012. The other 4 things are too much to do in one day. I thought the Jewish Museum was great and would recommend it. I was disappointed with the Zadkine Museum. If you're looking for sculpture in the Montparnasse area then the Antoine Bourdelle Museum is much better than the Zadkine. |
Thanks for all the feedback folks. It was very helpful and helped my catch a couple of errors I had made.
I will be there in mid-April. Carnavalet- It's being listed as a low priority was mostly an oversight. When I was looking at the Marais area, it seemed like there were a lot of Modern Art Museums, and I accidentally lumped the Carnavalet in with them. I may still try to squeeze the Catacombs in somewhere, but dedicating a whole half day to a neighbourhood that I otherwise have almost no interest in doesn't make sense. There are a number of things that for one reason or another are not listed but probably will do in the evening (Eiffel Tower, Seine River cruise) And some of the other suggestions folks had I made a note of and will include mention of them on my maps I make for each day. (It's always good to be aware what else is in the same area you are touring each day, just in case some time opens up.) Paris Itinerary - revised Day (Friday) arrival day St. Chappelle (H) Notre Dame (H) Conciergerie (M) Louvre - evening (H) Day (Saturday) Les Invalides (H) Musee Rodin (H) Orangerie (H) Day - Versailles (Sunday) Well, going when the fountains are running means the weekend, which means even more crowds. Of course, I have to be somewhere on the weekend. Day (Monday) 1/2 day Louvre 1/2 day Orsay (H) Eglise St. Sulpice (M) Jardin du Luxembourg (L) Musee du Luxembourg (L-H, depending) Day - Montmartre (Tuesday) Sacre Couer (M) St. Denis Basilica (H) Day - West Paris - (Wednesday) Marmottan Monet(H) Bois de Boulogne(M) Musee Guimet(M) Petit Palais(M) Day -(Thursday) Musee Carnavalet (M) Jewish History Museum (M) Centre Georges Pompidou (L) La Pere Lachaise (M) The Pompidou comes down to how tired I am at the end of this day. It's open late, however my museum pass will expire the day before (all the other attractions for this day are either free or not covered by the pass anyway), so we will see how much energy I have. |
Thanks so much for posting that link to the City Hall tours!!!!
I'll be in France in 3 weeks, and I wanted to see inside that building... |
