One way car rentals from Croatia to Greece

Hello everyone,

I've read some posts regarding one way European car rentals so I have a handle on that. My question is this. I can't seem to find any one way rentals from Zagreb, Croatia to Athens, Greece with a duration of about 10 days commencing July 11, 2018. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mike

This is almost a no start plan. If you find a company to offer this, the charge will be extreme. I wish I could offer more positive news, I wish you good luck with this.

<i>"I can't seem to find any one way rentals from Zagreb, Croatia to Athens, Greece..."</i>

That might be a clue. Although Croatia and Greece are both EU members, you would have to travel through at least 2 or 3 other countries, some not in the EU. Then the company would have to repatriate the rental car to Croatia. Wouldn't it be easier to fly?

I don't think that any rental company offers that option.
Hypothetically speaking .....the car would have to be returned to Croatia.. you would have to pay for the expenses of having someone to collect the car in Greece, drive it back, gas for the trip, meals and overnights for the driver ....

This is a probably a no start plan. I never heard of any company doing this and if you do find one you will pay small fortune for reasons given.

The only chance - and a remote one - is when you go to a rental station in Croatia, they happen to have a Greece-registered car that needs returning, and they may do a deal with you. It isn't something you can arrange in advance. This is something that used to happen in Western Europe, such as one-way between France and Germany, but a remote possibility with two countries so apart.

You can stop looking -- there isn't one. You need to rearrange things and/or change your transport plans.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. Have travelled many other places but know very little about this region. Heimdall, your suggestion of flying is great but there are many sites my wife, granddaughter and I wish to see in between which necessitates a vehicle. Alec, that is a great suggestion which I will try even though you're right, it's probably a very long shot.

Thanks again,

Mike

You can just forget what Alec said, there is absolutely no possibility a rental company in Greece will have a croatian rental car to return.

I don't see any options of reaching Greece from Croatia other than flying. Trains are not option either, if you would like to travel through Albania.

You can travel from Tirana and other albanian cities to Greece by bus, but i know nothing about the other countries you want to travel along the way.

Do your 10 days include Croatia and Athens? If so, it's hard for me to imagine what you would be able to see in that time, particularly if you are driving.

You may have some public transportation options other than flying if intermediate destinations are a high priority. Have you consulted rome2rio.com for your options? It can be a very useful resource, but if you use it, be sure to check the links to which it directs you, because rome2rio is not sensitive to seasonal variation in transportation schedules.

Good luck!

Forget trains in that area, but there is nothing wrong with the buses. A few years back I traveled by bus from Sarande in southern Albania to Dubrovnik. No problem. Buses (KTEL) in Greece are even better. I haven't checked to see if there are buses across the border, but if not you could either hire a car and driver in Sarande or take a ferry to Corfu and then a ferry to Igoumenitsa - or all the way to Piraeus although northern Greece is well worth seeing and I recommend Thessaloniki, Ioannina and Kastoria. kja has a good point about the time available, though.

There is about 1 Mi. Albanians living in Greece, there are connections between many greek cities and Albania. :)

" but there are many sites my wife, granddaughter and I wish to see in between which necessitates a vehicle"

Which ones? In Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia or Kosovo?

The alternative would be to spend all 10 days between Zagreb and Dubrovnik and to fly from there to Athens.

"There are many sites..."

Maybe northern Greece. Lots to see there.
