One way car rental in Portugal
We will be in Portugal, Northern Spain and Provence next March. We are planning on renting a car in Lisbon and drop it off in Provence but have been unable to find car rental agency that permits dropping off in another country, except for AutoEurope which charges the astronomical amount of US$10.700 for a three week rental.
Would very much appreciate any suggestions, either on rental agencies or better ideas as dropping the car in Spain and taking a train to Provence. Thanks in advance. Bea |
Sadly, dropping off a car in another country is always expensive. Even dropping it off in another city can be a little pricey these days.

You can rent the car in Portugal, drop it off close to the border, and then take a bus to Pntevedra or Santiago and rent a car for that part of the trip, and do the same thing at the Spanish-French border. Or depending on what you want to see in Spain, rent the car in Portugal, do a round trip that includes Spain and then fly from Portugal to France using one of the discount airlines.

If you are coming from outside EU, you can avail yourself of Peugeot's Open Europe programme:
http://www.peugeot-openeurope.com/ You can pick up a brand-new car in Lisbon and drop off at several locations in Provence. You do have to pay a supplement for Portugal pick-up, but it will be much cheaper than what Auto Europe has quoted you. I just put in random 21 days in March for a compact diesel automatic (308) for Lisbon - Nice and was quote 1524 euro all-in, including 250 euro fee for Lisbon pick-up. |
Reanault Eurodrive car lease best if you must do this...
seat61.com train light years better simpler cheaper for me And have done it both ways in the past. Just Hop on and off like a local The buses are nice and can be a better choice in Spain in the North... Oporto Vigo Santiago for the way of St James Galicia was 12 euro for me and more regular than train up there... Alsa usually my fav bus in Spain For Provence take the Talgo Med from Brecelona Sants to Montpellier hopping on and off a wonderful ride. Happy Planning! |
Thanks LSky, Michael, Alec and Qwovadis for your great ideas. Im off to work now but tonight I'll check the websites you have mentioned. I do want to make the trip by car, since we will be renting houses in Portugal and Provence which require a car.
I'll have to ask you guys advise on the itinerary. Again, many thanks, Bea |
A car lease may be your solution. It will cost an extra $300 to pick up the car in Lisbon, but no extra fee for dropping it off in France.
http://www.renaultusa.com/ AutoEurope offers Peugeot leases and should be checked for a price comparison. |
