one night stay in cortona
 

Can someone help me with an overnight stay in Cortona, shoul I stay in the town center or will an outside hotel be better since we will be on our way to venice the next morning. If you have accomodations name I will appreciate it very much.

We loved the Hotel San Michele in Cortona, particularly the suite in the tower room with views on four sides. I recommended it to another Fodorite who also enjoyed it.

I would also recommend the San Michelle. Lovely.

While in Cortona we always stay at the St.Michele, good location near the main square. The car can be parked free a few blocks from the hotel, going down.
When I mean down it is DOWN and then of course the driver has to go UP...but for us it was ok.
Rooms vary a LOT. So it is hard to compare with other places. Breakfast is very good.

Tribi, are you driving or relying on the train? I ask that because I spent a few wonderful days in Cortona in June -- it really is a lovely town -- but it's really difficult to get from the train station up to Cortona. I admit, I had read warnings that it can be hard to find taxis from the train station, but I didn't really pay attention thinking that it couldn't be THAT difficult. Well, I actually sat two hours at the train station waiting for a taxi to show up! There are plenty of phone numbers posted for cab companies outside the train station, but there were no answers at any of those numbers. One bus stopped soon after my train arrived, but I didn't take it because my hotel was about a 10-minute walk from the bus stop at Piazza Garibaldi, it was raining and I didn't want to drag my suitcase all the way from the bus stop. And I foolishly figured a cab would be along soon.....

I'm rambling a bit, but I wanted to suggest that if you are taking trains, it might be good to ask your hotel to have a cab pick up you up at the train station.

By the way, I stayed at the Hotel Italia, which is just off the Piazza Independenzia, one of the town's main square. It was great, not expensive, beautiful rooftop breakfast room (which is enclosed in glass so you can sit up there year-round!)

There's a small lesson in Sac's posting: Call the hotel and ask them to send a cab to pick you up.

Sac my husband will be driving there from Montalcino, we will only stay overnight hoping to get there around lunch time and get a chance to look around a little bit and then the next morning we will be driving to venice.
