One Night in Rome
I am spending ONE night in Rome (or in the vicinity having departed from a cruise the morning before) and departing from Rome airport the next day). I want that one night to be special, within reason.

I realize I cannot take it in all in a day, but would like to stay in a reasonable, yet very cool "feel of the city" type hotel. I would like it to be within walking distance of major attractions that are "must see" for Rome.

If you have been there before and are in your early 40's (as if that would describe our interests) and have a good recommendation on a reasonable "feel of the city within limits" hotel...that is what I am after.

Any and all replies appreciated.

What was it I said in William's play? "All men are ....?" Oh well, no one listens anyway.

To think one can get a "feel" for Rome in one night is hubris at the extreme. Maybe enjoy a good meal. Maybe see one sight. Get a "feel"? Ludicrous.

So, tell me how you really feel?:-)

Let me put it this way -- I am assuming you HAVE been there before -- what would you recommend seeing or staying above anywhere else?

Well, you want a staight answer, not a sarcastic one right? I would take the undergrownd to Colosseum, get off and do the phone tour of the Colosseum. ( you rent a phone and it is a self guided tour) you can go as slow or as fast as you like. Walk past the Forum which is across the road, and look down into the area from some vantage points. It will take too long to do that tour. Walk a little further and you will come to the Victor Emmanuel Monument, which is quite something to look at. With your back to the front of the monument, there is a long street ahead of you. Walk down this street about 4 - 5 blocks and you will come to a sign that says Trevi Fountain( to the right) This street, I forget the name, also has some cute shops along the way. From here, if you still have time, take a cab to the Vatican and all you will have time for is to visit St. Pauls . The museums take too long- or you can take a cab from Trevi to the Spanish Steps, eat around there and shop at all the beautiful stores. You can easily get the flavor in one day. Just remember to say scuzi wherever you go.( excuse me)

I would highly suggest seeing Trevi fountain at night - it is beautiful and romantic! And don't forget to throw in your coin so you will return for a longer visit next time!

Buy a rose from the gypsie kiddies selling them at the restaurants.

Go to the Church of the Bones, just up from Piazza Barbarinni on the way to see the US embassy. Don't let the pushy munk scare you or coerse you to "donate" more money.

Late in the evenings stroll through Piazza Nevona, where there are artists drawing portraits, locals singing, palm readers, and the "real" Roman night life happening.

Do the walkig tour mentioned above by the Colloseum, Roman forum etc. The most picturesque spot though is near the Circus Maximus (aka Ben Hur stadium) in a little church. It has the Boca della Verita (Mouth of Truth). Take a picture with your hand in the mouth.

The BEST map of the city is the simplistic McDonalds map you can find at any location (McDonalds by Spanish Steps is the most elegant McDonalds you will ever go in).

Yes, you can accomplish all this in one day! Just wear good shoes.
