I'm 100% w/ starrsville here. And I'm afraid we're all being enablers

Do you ponder this much over every little decision? It would drive me nuts - and it would take 3 years to plan for a 2 week vacation. I've taken less time/agony to decide which car to buy.

By the time you finally choose a place it will probably have filled up w/ new bookings. . . . . . . .

Hmmmm janis and starrsville, I think you probably travel a great deal more than I do and are probably more travel-wise. Actually this has been extremely helpful in understanding Paris, its environs and its possibilities. It really isn't just hotels, it is location and atmosphere. I don't travel much, I have absolutely no background about Paris/France and so it has been a learning experience, and a fruitful one. Starrsville, I agree, you should never consider being a travel agent.

This has been one loooooooong exercise on fickle-mindedness and unwarranted indecision. starrsville sure hit the nail head-on with a hammer.

For goodness sakes. I've seen HUNDREDS of threads on Fodors where people were having a hard time deciding on a hotel. (And we weren't making it easier when we kept jumping in and adding another option to the list.)

Adam, you are absolutely right. It's very frustrating. But when you started out 3 days ago you didn't know the 5th from the 6th or that the Eiffel Tower is in the 7th. You've come a long way.

By the way, if you've never looked for a hotel in Rome, just know that Paris is a piece of cake!

If your father or grandfather was a WWII veteran, you can get a 15% discount at many hotels, in all area and all ratings. Look at http://paris-hotels-for-world-war-2-veterans.com/ for more information. With our dollar so weak, this is an excellent value. Unfortunately the promotion ends May 8th.

Thanks jlillberto for that information. My dad was at the Landing of Normandy as was my uncle. Paris is a side-trip for me, Normandy is my first interest.

And thank you JeanneB for your comments. I know I am not alone in my learning curve and confusion. I have learned a lot. I think it is unfortuneate that there is such a negative attitude from some people on this board. They don't have to read the threads, but most of all they don't have to be unkind to me and others. And I have actually seen that it is the same few who are unkind over and over again to an assortment of people. There are all sorts of people on these boards---some with so much experience, and others with none. Thank goodness that those that care and like to lend a helping hand far outweight those who are mean spirtied. The kind ones will undoubtedly make my and many other people's trips a wonderful memory.

There IS a way you can "pay it forward".

When you return, post a report on your hotels and any jazz clubs, interesting restaurants you visited. As you know, the more info you can provide the better. Such as room description. Even room numbers help, especially since you're travelling single. Information on singles is harder to come by than doubles.

Have you made your decision?

Yes! I plan to share my experience in detail What a gift it has been to receive others.

I've narrowed it down to Hotel du College de France and Hotel de France Invalides for the May Paris visit. Definitely CDF for April. For May CDF has a real shower(!!). Part of me says try something different the second time, but I guess my big question is for a 'new comer' is the 5th or the 7th a better place to be. Thoughts?

Also JeanneB that was an interesting discussion about the DeVillas. Really impressive place and for the money! But I agree Christina gave some good advice. But I did pass the hotel on to a friend of mine who goes to Paris often (she has a house in France). I thought it would be a wonderful for her to stay.

If it were my choice, I would choose the CDF for both assuming there's not a huge price difference. Am I correct that you only have 1 night in April, 4 nights in May?

Even though it's only one night, on that first visit you will become familiar with the hotel and its surroundings. That'll give you a head start on the 2nd visit.

That is what I have come down to also. I do only have one night the first go 'round and then I can come back and hit the ground running. Thank you for your input!

JeanneB: I'm set for CDF on the 4th floor street side, with a real shower(!)------thanks in a large, large part because of you. An FYI the single is 83 euros and the double is 93 euros. Hotel de France was 75 euros, Familia was 78 for a single, and Maxima was 83 for a single. I'm very satisfied and will share with you 'the results' when I return. When are you going---October?

We stayed at Familia Hotel in the Latin Quarter and it was wonderful. right across from Notre Dame and it was not too expensive. They have a webiste do a search, the owners were wonderful Even try Logis d' France they have fantastic B and B's all over France and are very reasonable.

Yes, we land in Rome on the 14th. Then on the 20th to Paris for a week.

We love Paris at night. The softly lit monuments along the Seine and at Place de la Concord...sigh. Try to be at Pont Alexander III at sunset and watch the lights come on at the Eiffel Tower. You and your son are going to love it. Have fun!
